vintage VIN number decoder?

I can't seem to find a VIN decoder that will work on my 1972 280SE 4.5.

The VIN is;
108087 12-008583*

The VIN decoder here only works for newer models. I'd love to run the VIN to get the exact engine type numbers etc, so I can order the exact parts. Tried the net, but nothing there either. ???

Ideas anyone?

Thanks!

Hi Peter,

Glad to help. Actually the older VINs are even easier to decode than the newer ones. Here is what yours means: 108-model 108, 087-280SE 4.5, 1-LHD (a 2 there would have meant RHD), 2-Auto Trans (a 1 there would have been a stick) and it happens to be the 8583rd 280SE 4.5 built.

Hope this helps.

Ike

fill that out and send to MB. I got a faxed copy of build sheet from germany in a few weeks. had good history of my 250sec and options it came with. its free, so why not. ask for a break down of vin.

RE: vintage VIN number decoder?

Hi flyboyike, my 1979 450 SEL VIN is 11603312084053.

Is this how it would break down:

116-model 116,
033-450SEL,
1-LHD (a 2 there would have meant RHD),
2-Auto Trans (a 1 there would have been a stick)
and what is the 084053?
thry didn't make 84,000+ 450 sels....

The last four digits are the production sequence, preceded by a digit for the year and a digit for the factory.

Actually, I must disagree here. Architect2 would be correct had these been post 1981 vehicles. And yes, I do believe they made 84000+ 450SEL 1973-1980. Anyone have the exact numbers. My 280E, for instance is 12303312049906. According to architect2 that makes it a 1974 which of course it isn't it's a '79. I certainly think they made 49906 280Es by 1979.

Hope this helps.

RE: vintage VIN number decoder?

thats right, they built thousands of 116's.If you want quick way to find the year,it won't be on the VIN,on a 108 or 109 it's under the pad on the center of the steering wheel.Stamped in fine font is the day, month and year the car came off the line.on my 6.3 it's stamped 26/3/69 which means it came off the line on the 26th day of Feb.1969.It's usually very faint so you have tolook hard..
The plant is never indicated in the VIN nor was the build date.MB classic has this of course back to 1936 for one plant and back to the beginning for the rest.[:)]
