Hi all. I'm new here, and soon to be a proud MB owner. This coming summer I will be picking up my late grandmothers '71 220D and driving it cross-country (roughly 2500-3000 miles) to its new home.
It is a well-maintained 4-speed car, with the engine professionally overhauled not too long ago, so I am not worried about the car making it. But, I would like some way to reduce the RPM's for the long highway miles. My research has found that the axle ratio on this car should be 3.92:1, and with the 1:1 top gear in the tranny, gives only 80mph at the governor.
Is there a Mercedes 5-speed overdrive (manual trans) out there that I could slip under this car? Is there a 5-sp from some other manufacturer that would work? Or, should I just go for a new axle ratio? How hard is it to change the rearend gears in these cars?
i have this car it is my car but i need to get it runing first well my father will be happy that the car can only go 80 lol but ill make it go faster lol thanks for the info on my car man[:)] also to help you on your proble why couldn't you just put a diff rear in it if it would fit[:)]
