CRANECAM Fireball XR700

ok, had a problem with the points last 2 weeks. found the wire from the condensor broke. decided it was time to change points. got the new ones in and cant seem to get the right timing. when mill is cold its ok. once warm the mill sputters and stalls. now i have had enough with points. looked around and saw a fireball xr700. i know nothing of this unit. looked at website and skimmed install pfd file. anyone have this thing in their car? looks like i need a xr700-231, not sure, but will call crane. any pointers, no pun, for install? thanks in advance.

RE: CRANECAM Fireball XR700

I just installed a pertronix module in my 72 250 and it took 10 mins-straight forward -one wire to the ballast and the other to the coil thats it. The car runs like an airplane now-it also replaces the vaccum advance so you can now disconnect those lines. My kit number was 1867-it could be the same for yours-otherwise just call pertronix and give them the bosch number of your distributor and they can match one up for you. http://pertronix.com/
Hope this helps

RE: CRANECAM Fireball XR700

i ordered the fireball xr700. got a coil to go with it. i havent read the instructions yet, but not sure of what to do with the low and high power wires to the coil.

i am still running points on the car till my xr700 comes in a couple weeks. anyone have any idea why the car runs rough when its warmed up? i had the points changed and runs ok when cold. once it warms the idle sputters when given gas. was thinking if the temp would have something to do with expanding the metal spring on the points and causing the gap to spread too much. who knows. anyone got that?

CRANE XR700 problem

I just installed an XR 700-231 and crane coil, in my '63 220b but havent got it running yet. I followed the instructions but when I turned on the ignition key I had smoke comming out of the balast resistor. The way my ignition was before the wire from the resistor went to the posative coil terminal and there was also a capacitor with a ground strap connected to the posative coil terminal. The instructions didn't say anything about that so I left them off. Now I am investigating what to do while my car sits. I dont want to take any chances and burn up the xr 700. Any body got any Ideas what I did wrong? Thanks Pat.

is your car positively grounded??? if that's the case you need to reattach that positive ground wire...

I don't think it is posativly grounded because the negative battery terminal cable goes to the chasis.

RE: CRANECAM Fireball XR700

from your fireball box you should hook the yellow wire to (-) of the coil and the red one to the (+) of the coil. you should also ground the box itself. if you have the xr3000 you need to jump around the resistor... if it's the 700 then everything should be the same. are you still running the original cd box? maybe that's it...

RE: CRANECAM Fireball XR700

Hi, I really appreciate your input. The yellow wire is to the neg. and the red wire is to the pos. and the xr700 box black wire is to ground. The car is an early 1963 with an M180 engine. I don't believe I have a CD box. If I do that could be the problem but I really don't think I had one. Attached is a picture of the way it was originally wired, with the capacitor and balast resistor attached to the pos. terminal and the neg. went to the points. The capacitor had a ground strap that went to the engine block.
