1977 300D -- need info on part name
I own a 77 300D Merc and recently I found that the wire that carries the current down through the glow plugs (filament-type plugs) was completely burned out (just ash) at the point where it connects to the 3rd glow plug (cylinder 3). I'd previously noticed that whenever I'd preglow the system (prior to starting) that spot would get red hot (much more so that any of the other glowplugs). Also, the next glow plug after that took a lot longer to heat up. I always had trouble getting the glow plugs hot enough to ignite the diesel. Sometimes I'd have to wait 10 minutes (flipping the ignition to preglow every few minutes) before it would start.
1) does anyone have any idea what could cause this? My glowplugs are fairly new, so I doubt its a case of faulty glowplugs. But I do get a little bit of diesel leakage which drips on to the glowplugs sometimes. Could it be carbon deposits screwing up the electrical connection?
2) does anyone know what the copper wire that I described above (relays current through the glow plugs) is called? I need to replace it asap, but am having trouble locating the part online. It would help if I knew the name of the part. Or if someone could direct me to a good Online store that stocks it, that would help too.
Thanks a ton for any input!
