'79 300D Battery Problem

Hi,
I have a '79 300D that keeps having a flat battery.
If I charge the battery and drive long distances the battery will restart the car fine. If I make short trips the battery goes dead and I have to boost it or re-charge it, usually I can only do 3 short trips before this happens. (Short trips as Shopping, Corner Stores, etc.)
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for replying.
I guess I should have indicated that it is a new battery from the Mercedes Dealer. The one that is recommended for the car.

i'm no expert but sounds like altenator problems to me. Sounds like altenator isn't delivering a strong enough charge to recharge your battery after a short drive... hope that helps.

not the alternator because it would not drive for long distance if it didn't charge the battery up, if the alternator was shot then the battery would take over the functions till it died then the engine would stop, the engine on newer cars run on the alternator not like the older generator systems where the car ran on the generator and the battery was only for starting

I have a '77 300D and had the same problem. Check the voltage at idle. It should be over 13 volt. If lower then I would take the car to an automotive shop where they can check both the battery and alternator. My alternator was marginal (I think one of the diodes were shot) and I had the same problem. Replaced the alt and still had the same problem but I got a bad rebuilt alt. Got another one and no problems for over a year.

I had a thought to other day. Could the glow plugs be on and draining the battery to the point that on short trips the battery hasn't the time to recover?
Is there a control switch that turns the glow plugs off after the initial start up?

Thanks for the voltage advice, I'll check that and keep my eye on the reading if I have it rebuilt.
