Interesting post, I suspect OP may have had his coil set up incorectly and simply corrected it. I know this occurs with some frequency with early positive ground vehicles from my involvemen with them, Model A Fords in particular. If you connect the coil "backwards" assuming negative ground the car will run, but with a weaker spark, correcting polarity reflects an immediate noticeable improvement - albeit not 60% as noted above.

I would guess same applies here - I know many Brit cars remained positive ground through the 60s but am not sure about this vintage MB, in any case, he certainly could have had polirity wrong on coil regardless of ground.
