Automatic Gearbox 73280CE

G'Day is there anyone who can help me on this, I Bought this Merc and It even had the handbook in the glovebox, but here is my problem, the book says all models were 4speed but I cannot notice a change into 4th Gear even when I travel at 120kph which is the limit here in Oz, Could I be overreving my engine or is the gearbox maybe sticking, Please Help

i'm pretty sure they normally start in second, so that is probably why you can't count properly...

try dropping it into 2, then running through the gears. upwards. it should start in first then.

Russ is correct, normally the tranny starts in second...

you can induce first gear start by pressing down on the gas pedal to activate the kick down switch. But it will be violent.

they are geared fairly low, and i do know what you mean that they rev high. i got mine rebuilt about 12 months ago and it's just the same...

although, i think i killed my engine last night, it makes a horrible metallic rattle when i accelerate. and it's coming from around the valvetrain area, tommmorrow i remove the covers...

Sorry to hear that Russ but maybe it's just the timing chain, I believe you need to renew them when they get noisy, I'll try Germanstar's suggestion and see if i can post a picture

My car does the same and always has. feels like it needs 5th gear going over 100.

to get to first just floor it. Doesn't putting it in L start it in first?
