newb W115 240 questions
I just bought a '76 240D 4-speed. It is in overall good, un-restored but all-original condition. I have searched these forums and the internet in general and haven't found a lot of info on these models. I was hoping someone could answer a few general questions. BTW, I am a decent "shade tree" mechanic, and have owned several BMW's and VW's.
1.) Is there a decent repair manual for these models? I don't seem to see a Bently's available, and I have never been to happy with the Haynes manuals (Chiltons are worse yet).
2.) Are there any web sites, books etc. that people would recommend for these models? When I do a web or ebay search for 240D, 95% of the stuff is for the W123. When I search for W115, I don't find much thats useful. Hopefully I am in the right place here.
3.) The gearing seems awfully short. Anybody know what the rear-end ratio is in this model? I realize that relatively short gears are probably necessary to make the low HP motor functional. I am surprised with how peppy the car feels with the 4-speed. I just keep wanting to shift again at about 60-65 mph. I know I am probably dreaming, but is there a 5-speed that can be swapped in fairly easily? If not, will the rear end from any other models (with taller ratios) swap in? I would be willing to loose a little pep through the gears in exchange for lower RPMs on the freeway (since I want to use this car mostly for my 80-mile round trip commute). Does the rear end in the 240D Automatic have taller gears?
Well, thats it for now. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom anyone can give me.
