interested in 280se 3.5 need advice

hello,

i'm a complete beginner when in comes to mercedes-benz classics but have recently become very interested in purchasing one. more specifically, i want a 280se 3.5 coupe (the w111). i'm basically looking for a project car, not a show condition car or anything like that. now as i've mentioned earlier i don't know too much about these cars.
does anyone now of any good sites for these cars? also can anyone provide a price guide of what i can expect for a solid body project condition vehicle? also any advice, tips or info regarding the topic would be much appreciated.

thanks in advance for any help!

RE: interested in 280se 3.5 need advice

I've seen a few ads at craigslist.org These people are actual owners and lots of times they want to sell their wheels fast and cheap. Craiglist is local to the bayarea,ca. I actually saw a 1971 280SE for sale ad with lots of pictures for $2000. and this is in Martinez,CA. E-mail me if your interested and I think I saved a copy of the ad in my other e-mail account.

I just got a 1970 280SE Coupe 6 cylinder...

I bought it off of ebay. Mine is a nice driver and is a good looking car. So I paid a little more than a project car. The 3.5's are pretty high in value so you might try a 6 cylinder, they look identical and the engines are easier to work on than the electronic V8 (MB's first). I surfed eBay for a few months to get into how the market was going.

One thing to look for is try and get a US model car. There are a lot of Euro models out there. One way to tell is the lights for the rear licence plate and Euro's have fog lights instead of orange lights at the front.

Most will have problems but that goes with the territory. There is a great looking 280SE coupe low grill on eBay right now. Go check it out. Just search for Mercedes 200.

RE: interested in 280se 3.5 need advice

Hi,
I bought a 3.5 coupe almost 2 years ago in SF. It is a European model with sunroof and 4spd stick. The reason I was looking for a European model was because I wanted a stick shift which was not available on US models. Also the European 3.5's have a different fuel injection ECU which provides more power. As long as it is what you want it dosen't matter where it came from. Mine was imported in early 70's and still has orig. 6 digit blue/yellow CA plates. The main thing with these cars is rust. Really check it out so you know what you are getting into. Also if you buy a project it is difficult to tell if that one impossible to find part is missing. It's kind of like buying a house-just take your time and don't get emotional-there are lots of coupes out there.
Hope this helps
Tony
