I just got a 65 220 SEB and have had some problems with trying to get it to run right. The car has been sitting for about 10 years and I honestly have not clue about how to work on the fuel injection system. The basic problem is that it idles very rough and smokes (not oil smoke but too rich fuel mix smoke. I have tried to make some adjustments to it and it seems that I just cannot get it to run right. I run a restoration shop... which is basically an american car resto shop. The me/be is a totally new animal to me and am not sure what to do. ANY help will be greatly appreciated. On a final note.... as stupid as this may sound.... how do you get the oil plug out to change the oil?
my data dosnt go that far back but what injection system is on it, probably the D-jetronic used on the porche and chances are its the idle air bypass valve clogged up
I did all the normal tune-up stuff. I put new plugs (bosch platinum per factory service manual). New plug wires (oem with the steel ends), cap, rotor, points etc. I have tried adjusting the idle mix screw on the injection pump, the only problem is that once I get it adjusted so that it does not smoke at idle it will stumble terrably upon acceleration. I adjusted the timing to factory specs. I am completely baffled by this problem. Once I get it up around 1250 - 1500 rpm it completely cleans up and stops its smoking. I just cannot get it to idle smooth, and when I get it to idle to smooth it does not have any performance. --- By the way my 220 is a Euro with the single headlight on front and no parking lights on the front fillers.
alter the ignition timing so it idles better, it could be the fuel because of the ban on leaded the mix could be well out also does it look as though the cylinder head has had work on it like has it been converted for unleaded??, check for air/vacuum leaks round the injection intake and has that been cleaned out
I took the car up to a guy that used to be a mercedes mechanic in the 60's. He said that he has some ideas about what it could be. He noticed that the linkages were out of adjustment and he is going to tune it with an exhaust analizer to get the injection set just right. He seems to know what he is doing, so I am anxious to see what he does... I will post a note when I find out just what it takes to fix it.
Well, I got the car back. It has 3 injectors that are stuck wide open so they are dumping too much gas and the valves were too tight and there was some compression loss. He said to put a new injector rack in it and then we will see if the injection pump is any good. If there is any whay of cleaning the old injectors please let me know.
