My new 1980 300SD and some questions

I have just acquired a 1980 300SD Turbo Diesel. Car was free to me but the rear window (windshield) had a brick thrown through it. I plan on slowing restoring the car (232K miles) as well as adding a little punch (adjust Turbo), among other things.

Does anybody have any tips on re-installing the the rear windshield? Going to the salvage yard tomorrow for replacement glass. I know I need a new seal (not from the salvage yard). Should I just call a glass install place? Will this be a major PITA to do this myself?

Also, with a 6.9 gas engine fit in this car?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to any help!

A professional glass installer will not install a "used" piece of glass. Liability concerns. The 6.9 will fit, but you will need a new tranny for the 6.9 too. The 300 SD tranny will not accept the 6.9 engine.

RE: My new 1980 300SD and some questions

Go to a MB dealer to get the special
sealant they use for the glass.

What I used to do is:

Wrap a rope around the seal making
sure you push it in the channel
real good.
Then after applying the sealant put
the glass in place making sure to press
it firmly all around to ensure that it
is even all around.
Then pull the rope out of the rubber
seal starting from the bottom middle
and work your way around to the top.
This seats the seal and should not leak.

But I don't know if this will work for the
MB since I have never done one before.

Louis.

Thanks for the responses, considering it was in the wrong forum! I'll probably try the glass installer first to see what they say.

Yeah, come on over to the w126 forum – but that’s cool because you have the same engine used in the 300 D w123, you’re welcome in both fora!

Welcome and good luck with the glass.
