W116 S-class article in Mercedes Enthusiest

Anyone else read the article and think that it was a little too harsh on such a wonderful car? Sure it's not a 2 door, but why are people allegidly reported as not being fond at all of them. Call my opinion skewed because I own a 450SEL, but they are absolutely wonderful vehicles...In his article he reminded that to compare them to modern vehicles would lead to dissapointment, however apparently his article was written from basically that stand point instead of it being just a reminder that the car is not new, which any monkey knows. Additionally, the 450SL/C are held in high regards, celebrated by so many article and are so "wonderful" - I am confused, add 2 doors, a solid roof, more space and luxury and suddenly the vehicle becomes an aged object for pity? Sounds hypocritical since all the cars are closely related - attack W116 and you attack the whole range of the time since you're attacking the flagship of the line. If a Cavalier is considered a "modern car" by millions, yet someone goes around bashing the W116's, then there is no justice. It seems like all of the articles in the magazine really shine a positive light on the model being represented, but I got nothing but a bad vibe from the writer - especially for a car called "the best car in the world" when it was in production.

The writer is probably a SL hardliner that would never be caught dead in a sedan.

I love older MB sedans, think they're classy and make the occupants feel like stars!

I did read it and also wasn't very impressed. Maybe the cars they reviewed weren't kept up or restored properly, becasue a W116 should handle and drive nearly as well (or better) than a lot of modern cars. Plus it has an element of class and refinement that would be difficult to reproduce today (new) without spending 300k. The W116 always gets an unfair rap these days, but I think in time it will become one of those "lost classics".

As far as the author being disappointed...stepping from a clean 111, 108 or 116 into most any modern car is the "real" disappointment IMO. If not having a ridiculous navigation panel, 26" wheels and cupholders is what makes the W116 a "disappointment" I genuinely feel sorry for the guy. :)

RE: W116 S-class article in Mercedes Enthusiest

My blue 116 has done just under 600,000klms. My silver one a little under 300k. I've had blue since 1988. A 126 was mine for 3 months. A 6.9 for 12. A w140 got a look but didn't cut it. I'm a little north of 60 and have owned 2x 6cyl BMWs; 2x Alfas; 2x 6cyl Fiats; 2x V8 Fords; 2x6cyl Holdens; 1xV8 Statesman, 1x3.8 Jaguar(worst of all for dependability + repair cost)3x Datsuns a Mazda and a V8 Studebaker.
I continually travel in other peoples' modern cars - which must be Blessed; because they frequently subdivide into 3 equal parts if you hit a tree in one - and know I'm safer in my 116. The wife of the Benz tech who services my cars hit a tree in her 116 @ 140kph causing the front to fold under the car - and she cut her forehead.
In most 'modern' cars I suspect it would have required a body bag to relocate her from the crash scene.
By all means talk down the 116 - it doesn't change the reality that the 116 is probably the best Benz ever built.
