What is a 1980 W116 300SD worth?

I am looking at one with less than 85,000 miles. Near perfect interior and no rust. The problem is the price. Any suggestions on what I should offer him?

RE: What is a 1980 W116 300D worth?

Unfortunately, you will have little to no bargaining power in this situation - he has a car that is for starters amazing. W116's are awesome. Secondly, a diesel with such few miles and that is in decent shape inside and out makes it extremely desirable. Lastly, the price of fuel - it is a good and a bad thing! You want a diesel to fight the prices, but now is NOT the time to be buying a diesel - prices will be inflated hugely (now is the time to buy a 560SEL [:D]) He'll probably take the position "oh, who cares what price you want, I'll sell it to someone else for what I want out of it".

When gas prices are low, a car of this calibre is very expensive - may ring in at $8,000 US - but with gas prices so high, I can see it rining in at well over $10,000 US - so be forewarned.

What is he selling it for? If it is low or something, be wary of tricky rust sports (shock towers, floor pans - W116 has TONNES of padding to hide it)

Lastly, are you sure it's a W116 and not a W123? Don't think they made these on 116's, is it a conversion maybe?

Last thing to remember is the 300D engine is 77 bhp - 225 bhp from the 4.5 V8 pulls the chunky W116 to 62 m/hr in 9.5 seconds - you do the math - may wish it was turbo [:)]

Good luck and hope to hear from you - confirm the body type and how much he wants for it - we'll tell you if it's fair. Just remember it's "cash grab" time for diesel sellers right now! Just go to a VW dealership and ask how long the TDI waiting list is!

You're wrong about one thing W108:
the W116 300SD has 111hp if it was built from '78 to '79, if it was built in '79-'80 like in this case, it has 121hp. Wich isn't bad at all for a late 70s diesel car. they run about 14-15secs to 62mph and about 105mph top speed.
I think a normal price would be between $6500 and $8000.

RE: What is a 1980 W116 300SD worth?

Yeah I just got a W126 300SD turbo but not before looking at a W116 one as well which was far gone - when I noticed it last weekend hah.

I just never thought they had these with diesels until I saw a few around town - because Mercedes Enthusiets doesn't have diesel models in it's back values because the values are always changing according to the price of gas I'd figure, so I assumed, you know? Kinda half research [:)]

Later and sowwy hehe
