RE: Identification Help

Well, if you post the VIN, we can at least tell you what kind of car it is -- that might be a good start.

RE: Identification Help

Just what I thought.

It's a W111 or "Heckeflosse". It is the first generation of Mercedes-Benz S-class vehicles which ran from 1959 to 1968. These vehicles were hand assembled. These vehicles gave birth to the W108/109 S-class which looks very similar, but without the fin tails. Some people loved the fin tails, other people were very happy that the W108/109 did not include them.

220 - 2.2L I6
95 bhp, 124 lb/ft

220S - 2.2L I6
110 bhp, 127 lb/ft

220SEb - 2.2L I6 FI
120 bhp, 140 lb/ft

300SE / 300SEL - 3.0L I6 FI
160 bhp, 185 lb/ft

There are also an assortment of coupes and convertables which are extraordinarily valuable and sought after, but I have only stated the 4 doors since that's what you have. The values for the four doors are strong none the less. With values for an excellent example ranging from 6,000 British Pounds for the 220 all the way to 9,000 British Pounds for the 300SEL.

111-012-12-129729

111 : Model W111
0 : Gasoline
12 : Engine Model, I think it's 220S
1 : LH Drive
2 : Automatic Transmission
129729 : 129,729 th off the line / car serial number

RE: Identification Help

I didn't think the old finback sedans were W111s. I thought it was just the 220SE/250SE/280SE/280SE 3.5 coupes & convertibles that had the W111 designation. Guess I was wrong...

RE: Identification Help

Remember the chase scene from James Bond and On Her Majesty's Secret Service....A W111 sedan was chasing Bond and his fiance's Cougar!
