Transmission questions

Hey guys,

I have a W114 parts car a "280" with the 2.8L DOHC I6 with Solex.

It's transmission is 722.102

I want to know that if anything happens to the transmission in my 1978 450SEL if the transmission on the 280 will be of any service aka can I swap them? Both are 3 speed auto's with torque converters. The 450 takes 722.004
transmission.

Any suggestions or wise words would be awesome to hear.

Tory

RE: Transmission questions

Hmmmmm shouldn't be an issue, but I'll look up some details and post back here later this week.

RE: Transmission questions

LOL, sorry, bit more than a week, but I've just been having too much fun lately to post
in forums (actually not really[;)])..

Anyhow, I asked a friend of mine that is far more knowledgeable than myself if the two are
interchangeable, and according to him the torque converters are different (OK so we probably
figured that much), furthermore (and this the important bit) he claims they are not swappable
between the 722.1 and 722.0 series. Glancing at the fiche it was difficult to determine any other
notable incompatabilies, and unfortunately we didn't have two "junked" ones to compare with one
another as I was hoping for.

I wish I had more specific details, I can't say it 100% wouldn't work but it may be more hassle
than it's worth, usually the differences between two series aren't entirely minor...and if the
torque converters aren't changeable (as my friend claims) the power delivery of the engine would
not be the same.

RE: Transmission questions

First of all , I do not mean to hijack the thread i am posting just because the problem i have is similar.

I have 1989 190D with 2.5 diesel. Do you guys know if 190E transmission will fit to it?? are there any other transmissions such as 240D, 300D will fit?? I have done some home work but cant find a definite answer. It looks like most of these cars do use 722.4xx tranny's.

RE: Transmission questions

Hi Tory.

I belive the 722.102 is a 4 speed. I don't think it will fit in your W116. There are even some 004's that will not fit.

To a1jatt.

I think a 722.414 is the only transmission you can use. The 190E 722.400 or 722.411 will have wrong ratios, if they fit at all.

Regards

Geir

RE: Transmission questions

The major differences, aside from the convertor,is the valve body, the difference between the 722.xxx in the 6.9 and the 722. in the 280 are too many to list. There are in fact 600 differences according to mercedes.[:0]
