Just got a 64 300SE Coupe

Hello! I just aquired vin #112.021-12-006421. I'm a Porsche 914 guy & know nothing about these. I got it thru a lein sale. I'm looking to sell it, and don't want to get ripped off because I'm uninformed. Can someone help me out? The idea here is to check it out, find out what it's reasonably worth, and sell it to someone with the time/money/interest in fixing it up. I've got way too many projects going on right now to even consider taking on another one. I'd love to have a car as cool as this one seems to be, but it isn't in the cards right now. I took a ton of pics if anyone is interested, email me. Surface rust on the lid edges, interior needs restitching and front seat recovering, but overall very restorable.

Rust is a problem on these old coupes. Headlight area and rocker panels mostly. Depending on miles and options they are going for $5-6 thousand. In tip top shape maybe $12-14 thousand. Check Hemmings for some pricing guides. A good restoration can run $10 thousand easy.

I'm interested and/or may know somebody else that would be. Where is it located? Email me privately if you wish.

RE: Just got a 64 300SE Coupe

Spent a couple hours with the car today. Put 5 gal gas in it, hooked up a battery, and the baby fired right up! I'm impressed! I let it run for a few minutes, turned it off & replaced a leaky fuel line, and let it run for an hour or so. The back suspension went right up and stayed there, but the missing left front valve wouldn't allow the front to go up. All the gauges worked, all the lights worked, interior fan, etc worked. Other than it needing to be serviced in the worst way, and running quite rich, this baby is ready for the road (as soon as I find that pesky valve). I got NO bids at $4K on ebay, so I'm at a crossroads. Do I try & find the valve, service and tune it, or do I let it sit & occasionally try to sell it? I'm afraid of putting more money in it than I can reasonably get for it later. Can anybody advise me? Anybody got a valve they can sell me (cheap, of course :^) )? Oh yeah, 98% rust free! Some minor surface at the edges of some panels, and some rusty chrome on the front bumper. The rest of the chrome is in excellent shape. This is a gem!

RE: Just got a 64 300SE Coupe

I just went and looked at Mark's car this morning.

My opinion is that it's well worth saving, and it's actually not in as bad a shape rust wise, as Mark thinks.

The floors appear to be fine, and solid. The only real rust out that I located is in the front sheet metal that the front bumper attaches too, a small amount around the left front jack lug which has caused the jack lug to not be useable, and in the left well of the trunk, but only some minor small holes here. There are some rust bubbles coming through the paint along the rear of the trunk lid about 1" or so up from the bottom, but they aren't too bad right now.

The car has been repainted and the paint is actually excellent. It was originally color #462, but I could see nowhere, where the original color was visable. It's very dusty/dirty from sitting outside, but a gently wipe of my finger brought me right to smooth shiny, glossy paint. The chrome trim....all of it, is the same way, except for the front bumper which is not correct for the car anyway. It has the rubber strip in it. Some of it's chrome is peeling.

The driver's door glass is smashed out carpets are missing on the floors and what remains is in bad shape. Seat upholstery is bad too. Actually the rear could be saved if it was removed, treated with "Leathereque" and then resewn, and maybe repainted. Probably worth the effort.

Headliner is perfect. Sunroof is a manual one, which surprised me (my coupe's is electric).

Dash wood is fair. The veneer is still intact but the clear coat is thin and raised. The window defroster wood is loosing it's veneer at the window corners (typical). Dash leather is fine, as is the door panel leather and other leather. The rear parcel shelf is getting pretty bad though.

The real bummer is the missing valve for the right front suspension. I got a quote today for $950 rebuilt exchange from Neil at "Star Motors." Also missing is a coupler at the suspension control box on the left inner fender. Neil gets $25 for those.

The engine looks fine/normal and is actually quite clean. I didn't try to start it. It's amazing how big it is compared to my 250se! First one I've seen up close!

I think it's well worth his $2,800.00 asking price and it's currently registered here in California, so the hard part's done there.

If it wasn't for the missing valve, this would be an easy dust and wax and you'd be driving it around. Either order the proper leather kits from World Upholstry and Trim and do the seats and carpets yourself, or take it to your favorite upholstery guy and have it done in MB Tex. It would be fantastic with just that much work done to it.

You could pick away at other items after that. Seems like a great opportunity to own a 300SE to me....and not have to spend 10-15 large right off the bat. For the person who likes to dig in and have fun, this would give back some fast rewards!

I'd be happy to help save this car....it's next stop is storage in V.W. junk yard and I can tell you that that is going to be a very sad place for it, and probably the end of the line.

Here are some photos.
