1980 240D Mercedes

Got scammed when I bought this car a few months ago. I thought this would be a reliable car with a newer engine with supposedly only 45K miles on it. But the rod bearings are shot and I can't afford to get a new engine. I'm wondering what the chances are of just replacing the bearings myself. I don't know what kind of condition the crankshaft is in and won't until I take it all apart. Is this a crazy idea? Has anybody undertaken this before and maybe has some advice? Thanks a lot!

If it is also a 1980-240D, than this forum is more helpful:
W123 E,CE,D,CD,TD,TE Class - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum
as is stated above.

It could pumped out of the dipstick if the carter ventilation is blocked/frozen. Do you live in a cold area?
