stetched hood release cable

cold weather today and the battery died and when I tried to pop the hood on my '72 350 to boost the battery, the cable must have snapped or stretched because it didn't release the hood locking mechanism. How do I manually open the hood??....any ideas?

RE: stetched hood release cable

It seems to me that your first step should be to remove the release handle inside the car, then try giving the cable a tug with some pliers. Let me know if that doesn't do the trick.

This response covers the 240D, but other models as well. I've seen all kinds of advice on this problem including breaking the grille to get at the latch. All you need to do is insert a screwdriver into the rightcenter, topmost slot in the grille. You can use the hood pop-up pin as a lever to engage the latch and pop! it opens up part way so that the pull tab is activated/popped out from the grille. It helps to use a strong flashlight to find the location of the latch. The pop up pin is a small tube containing a spring-loaded pin that pushes the hood up when the hood latch is released. At that point, you can replace the cable. (Why mess around with a 30+ year old cable?) Hope this helps for the many questions I've seen on this.
