My top is STUCK!!

while attempting to put the convertible top away, I have managed to get it stuck halfway, won't go into the boot, can't put it back up. sounds stupid, but it is well and truly stuck. I've tried to out think it, tried to gently persuade it, and even avoided the helpful neighbor with a crowbar(!). It appears that the rear window section is inside the compartment, while it should be outside. the rest of the mechanism won't fold nicely on top of the window section, and is binding up on something. There has got to be a trick to this, and I'd appreciate any help or advice from the group before I begin to disassemble the top in order to get it down. HELP!!

I did the same thing when I first bought my 280SL. I assume you got it resolved. I know how it happens but was unable to find a graceful way to reverse it out. I ended up tearing the bottom center of the canvas top near the rear pin.

My top is UN-stuck!

whew....hope this never happens to you, but there is a solution. for some over-engineered reason, there are latches down deep in the mechanism that hold the top in a cobra-like half up, half down position. sure, there's a reason, but I can't figure it out. However, without using lethal force, you simply push the latches to the outboard edge of the car and the top meekly, (and smugly?) folds into the compartment. there may be differences in what the latches look like, but mine are chrome, hinge on the bottom, and push outwards to releease.

Apparently, the 'correct' way to maneuver the top is to fold the rear window first, hold it tight against the roof, and lower into the boot. that way, it won't wedge.

best of luck, and thanks for the help.
