While I have removed and refitted motors in this era of car, I haven't actually put any different motors into a 280SL. I know that the 230/250/280 motors can be interchanged in each SL with minor adjustments (e.g. putting correct accessories on etc) and I have personal experience with changing motors in 108 series cars from 250-280 etc.
You can exchange the motors from the 108 series cars (280SE etc) - from what I'm told pretty much straight exchange. The motors from the SLs were modified versions of these 108 series motors.
I have heard of people putting the 3.5 motor from the 280SE in a 280SL, and apparently in the 60s, someone at the factory put a 6.3 in a 280SL as a joke. I'm not sure of the modifications required for these exchanges.
