1982 380SL QUESTION

OK
I am sorry I am asking lots of questions but very new to this SL world.
I was told by my MB mechanic that I should stay clear of the 75 I was looking at.
I now found a what seems to be a very nice 82 380SL in red, the color I was looking for.
The car was taken care of very well and it recently (10,000 miles ago) had the dual timing chain installed.
The only problem that he told me about is that he ripped the passenger side plastic window the last time he put the top down. I am not sure if that can be fixed.
The car has 87K miles on it.
What does everyone think of this and what do you think it is worth.
No rust, no dents or dings, everything works.
Thanks once again.
Ed

Re: 1982 380SL QUESTION

I would recommend that you take the car to a mechanic for a good look before purchasing the car. I would try the Kelly Blue Book site to obtain a value for the car, www.kbb.com. There was an article a while back in Road and Track that wrote about the SL and their preference on which years to buy first. Here's a link to that article. http://fly.hiwaay.net/~gbf/107/rt.html
Just make sure the person really has documentation that the double timing chain was installed. If not, the article in Road and Track will tell you why. In regards to the plastic rear window, I assume that any convertible top company could repair or replace the window. Check the Yellow Pages. Hope this helps.
