Hi
There are a number of threads on auto box problems, you will find them by doing a search.
Check the electrical plug connections.
Best of luck

as well as wiring problems, have you checked the fluid level?

ONLY mb auto GEARBOX (not ATF) fluid can be used or DexRon 3 or 4....... MB is preferred.......... any lowness or overfilling or wrong fluid has been known to cause problems.

if all is ok, come back and someone will post more info.......... quote the vin number for mb pdf info.

Hi
I am trepidatious in crossing swords with malcolm, but as I understand things, having looked into autobox probs and ZF specs, Dexron oil is not suitable for these zf gearboxes. The requirement is very specific and you should get the correct part number from Merc or from another manufacturer who used these gearboxes (e.g. they were fitted to bigger Citroens). But make sure you are buying oil for this type of gearbox.
Using the wrong oil is disastrous, will wreck the box.
There are quite a lot of posts on this topic.

NEVER be afraid of correcting anybody if you have something to say...... I am no expert, just someone who does his own work (called poverty and a very small disability pension) has done a lot in his life and who collects information.

I agree with your comments on the gearbox and the need for the best fluids...... mb spec ONLY their Auto Fluid for the gearbox in the UK however they spec DexRon 3 (DexRon 4 is higher spec) in other markets e.g the USA for the same gearboxes.

The only differences I can find (and I am happy to be corrected) is that these other markets are either more remote with poor supply chains or have laws (as in parts of USA) that ban the exclusive supply and specification of their own products / spares / service parts.

As I have said before "you pays yer money and you makes yer choices" with apologies to john wayne and popeye.

Me...... I tend not to use merc fluids on cost basis and I do NOT drive an automatic (I don't like them)

malcolm

remember this is a discussion forum and not a dictatorship.......... keep putting your point of view.

YES

preferably use mb fluid... its best to give your vin and then ask for what you want..........

it is always unwise to change oils etc without changing any associated filter(s)

if you post your vin I will post relevant pdfs

If its the ZF-4HP20 gearbox you will have to split the box in half to replace the filter.
