Vito 109cdi Ignition/key problem

I have a Vito 109cdi and it has what I can only describe as an electronic key, it is plastic and has three buttons on it. The end of the key inserts into the ignition barrel on the dash which is all plastic.

Normally when the key is pushed into the barrel the ignition lights illuminate and then the key can be turned to switch the ignition on and then start the vehicle. The only problem is that when I push the key into the barrel nothing happens it does not do it all the time though! I have to remove the key from the barrel and push it in the barrel hard, several times. On some occasions it has taken me 5-10 minutes before the key has worked.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance

Hi Cez

I have heard this can be a problem on the new vitos , I was told it can take 4- 5 days for MB to get a new key and code it.

sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for the reply.

If it is just the key that needs replacing then it is not too bad, I was thinking it could be the immobiliser or ECU.

I think it is less than £200 for a new coded key, which is much cheaper than what I was expecting. It's of course still a massive rip off for a bloomin key though!

Hi, I have already changed the remote batteries and it never made any difference at all.

Thanks chez.

Unhappy

Hi this exact problem happened to mine I left it and left it as it was an intermittent problem but then left me stranded.!! Only main deal can carry out the repair and it's the ignition barrel/key reader that became faulty they need Mercedes specific coding!! Expect to pay around £800-£1000 mark the parts alone are very expensive which bumps the cost up :-/
