I fitted a cd player at the weekend replacing the standard radio/cassette. On turning up the volume for some fave tracks, I found the speakers atrocious!
What is the best way of upgrading them? Any recommendations please?
hi curly i just done same, kids put cd on and the sound was awfull, let me know how you get on, at least then i will have good sound,to go with the slow vito, lol
Best thing to do is disconnect the speakers that are in the dash and have some fitted in the front doors, just make sure you use plenty of Dynomat otherwise it'll sound awful... ask me how I know! As long as they are well fitted and good quality sound deadening is used it is a much better location for speakers than in the dash.
I'm looking into doing this too with the 110 I've just bought. The van is a 6 seater without bulk head. I want to fit the system myself with the minimum cutting and chopping. So I'm thinking decent head unit with good iPod connection and pre-amp connector, better than OEM 4" co-ax to replace what's in the dash, pre-amp and pair of 6x9's mounted in boxes on the ply behind the rear seats, facing forward. The doors don't seem to have enough space to fit 6x9's. Not sure how far I need to go with damping materials and any advice would be appreciated.
This is a good thread that got me thinking beyond just upgrading the head unit and front speakers.

Hey curly 68, I agree the originals suck. I have a basic cd head unit(pioneer) with a set of cheap kenwood coax up where the originals were, a set of phoenix gold 6x9's in the doors and a 12inch soundstream t4 sub inbetween the two seats.
I am very impressed with how it sounds seeing as the coax and 6x9's are only running off the head unit and am going to ditch the sub as the 6x9's supply more than enough bass.
Dont be afraid to get into fitting the 6x9's in the doors as it is not too difficult, you can cut the plastic with a sharp knife and I just made neat little blocks to screw the speaker into behind the plastic, you will be surprised how much room there is behind there. Just be careful when removing the door pannel as it is quite easy to break the plastic clips.
I can try to post some pics of where I mounted mine if you choose to go this route.
That would be good if you could post some pics please. I have to take the door panels off to fit my leccy window kit and my central locking kit, so could do these at the same time!

That does look like a tight fit! Did you use dynamat at all as well? Will be purchasing some 4" and 6x9's next weekend. Will let you know how I get on.
I've put new theloudest.com 4" speakers in the dash. They've improved things a bit, but not amazing. Waiting for my Alpine CDE-9882Ri head unit to arrive which will hopefully improve things. Then I think I might have a go at putting the 6x9's in the doors like in the pictures above. If it's not good enough then it'll be pre-amp time.

Seriosly it will sound really good with your fronts and a decent set of 6x9s in the doors.I did use a type of dyna mat for the job yes, there may be a few rattles to sort out but nothing major. happy fitting....
