OK everyone, if anyone else could pin this one down......
Its a sort of tick tick tick noise, very regular, gave me the impression of something rattling in the engine.
Didnt bother me until recently, thought it was inside the engine, so probably best left alone. Then along came the old long scredriver stethoscope (a 35mm, 4 foot wooden curtain pole actually), and examination revealed much noise from the water pump diaphram housing, no noise from the power steering pump, ditto oil filter area and gereral engine areas.
I am tempted to say that its the water pump, but dont know how difficult it is to change one of these (please tell me its not an engine out job), and water pump noises tend to be squeals dont they?
If anyone could help, it would be appreciated. Me and my long wooden pole are waiting for instruction if anyone requires further examinations and prodding to be done!
Excellent method of pin-pointing source of erratic 'funny' noises! I use one of those long cooking spoons (wooden)! One other final check would be to remove the serpentine belt and then start the engine and see if the noise is still there, that way, you will be 100% that the defect/problem is in the water pump/tensioner/alternator/power steering pump objects.......though you may haver already sussed it out. PM me your email details and I will send you the water pump removal/fitting instructions - which year/model is your beast?

It is pretty simple to remove the belt but the nuisance factor is the enabling works - basically, removing the air filter housing and other "access restrictive" bits - depends on your model/year.
Don't worry about meltdown - you have enough time to check all bits - all serp belt does is drive the water pump, charge the battery, run power steering and AC so with stationery vehicle you have no problem except watch the engine temperature does not get too hot as there is no coolant flow. For the purpose of our exercise, no sweat!
Hi. I recently noticed a noise coming from the engine and when I opened the hood I noticed oil leaking from under the water pump pulley. Also, the pulley on the water pump was jerking around while the engine was running.
I checked for oil in the coolant and the coolant is clean (there is no coolant in the oil either). I'm wondering why there is oil leaking from under the water pump pulley. Has anyone heard of this?
