A cautionary tale..

Just thought I would share this information with u lot....

After a bender of an end of project party, I found that I had lost my key to my 115.

For those that dont know it, it has the IR type key. I called the local MB parts dept and got the "yes sir we sell u a blank that you have to go and get cut at a locksmith.." idiot!. So I speak to my normal service guy who is actually pretty good.....what he told me was quite interesting.

MB give you two keys when you buy the van and then make and keep 7 more of what they call "additional keys" and store these safely in the fatherland. When you get pissed and throw both your name and keys away, you sober up, go down to your local dealer with a copy of your vans registration papers, your ID document and ask them to despatch a u-boat with one of the additional keys NOT a replacement key.

Seems if you loose more than 7 keys, its time to replace the entire ignition module!!!! Well its pretty expensive for the key so I dont want to know what the whole ignition costs.......so, my advise?, go get hammered this festive season, just make sure u arent clutching the keys when this process starts!

Sarge, in funny money, One thousand rand excl 14% VAT, Rand:Euro is about 10:1, ine currency units that make sense to me - its about 12 cases of beer or a new back tyre for my bike or about the cost of a 16" tyre for my van

somebody must explain to me how I can re-format a laptop and reload all the software in a couple of hours but coding a car key should take four hours.......it takes all my dicipline not to want to assualt somebody when they talk such shite..I know that normal transponder keys that work off that inductive ring in teh ignition for the intelligence but still have a mechanical tumbler type system do have to be coded but heck its a simple and quick process. Does your van have an all plastic Infra Red key or what?

That rate of exchange thingy does skew things a bit I suppose. Chatting to mates from the UK its difficult to get an idea of what is expensive and what is not over here...anyway, wasnt planning on spending that money on something I already had.

The lesson for me is the way the key and ECU and ignition is married up, helps me try and understand that way the elctronics work.

This is also the same way I feel, honestly every time I need to contact Mercdads I leave it as long as I possibly can trying to avoid them, because I know I'm gonna end up stressed out.

I have the 2 button remote fob type, the one with the key flips out the side when a button is pressed. It is not infrared but radio.

I have taken it to my local locksmith and he 'read' the transponder and said he can copy it onto a standard looking key, this is ok to get the car started but won't help when U want to arm/disarm the alarm and lock/unlock the doors via the remote.

I purchased 2 remotes from fleeBay but cannot get them programmed. I have tried the ignition sequence to programme them but it doesn't work with my car.

I think you have the newer one though, and, to add insult to injury you get it even cheaper than our older types.

All of the above is incorrect, The key is programme for your vehicle when you order the key. You would need a very large warehouse to store every additional key for every MB vito van in the world.

It can take up to 4 hours to programme a key depending on the age of the vehicle how many times it has been started and whether it is an additional key or a replacement key.

Sarge, I enjoy this forum except for your negative attitude towards people who obviously know more than you. Most of the guys on here are genuinely trying to help, Anyone can have a guess ????

Do you really think that the security of MB products would as easy as buying key off Ebay?

Yes Yes Guru, You can live in a 'Mercdads' world thinking it is normal to pay extortionate charges to get simple things done, at maximum inconvenience. In this day and age of Electronics it is hardly believable that it takes 4 hours to programme a key to the ecu.... I don't believe it has anything to do with the age of the vehicle, and how many times the vehicle has been started that is rubbish in my view, which, incidentally I am perfectly entitled to air, together with everyone else here.

My attitude is not negative and never has been, it is simply reflections of experiences, to which as I said, I am perfectly entitled to air. We live in the real world Guru...And WHO are YOU to judge who knows more than who?
For you information, I HAVE GENUINELY helped many people on this forum and will continue to do so, whether it is via PM or reply to posts I am SURE others here would agree that I have gone out of my way several times, sometimes at my own costs, to help out of the goodness of my heart.
In my opinion I think I have helped more people than you Guru.
Just take a look at some of your blunt one line posts! .... and you think you are more helpful?!

Do you really think that the security of MB products would as easy as buying key off Ebay?

There you go again Mr Guru, you PRESUME that I had simply bought a key of fleebay and expected to use it on my car without any other intervention, Do you really think this?... U don't know me so don't Presume!

You pop up, slag off people then disappear, You conveniently fail to answer questions on previous threads/posts.

Guru refrain from making personal attacks on me, I am sure you can spend that time playing with something else............ that needs attention on your 'alleged' fleet of 140 vehicles...

Happy Holidays Guru

ooohh its getting a firey in here...!!!

Sarge, dont be pissing off just yet, you are like the life and sould out here. This forum was dead for most of the while, but she is looking mooch better, no?

Guru - its quite obvious u have some link into or with MB and thats feckin ace, but be a sport and put some oomph into what you say, I was very dissappointed that you did not have a go back a few weeks ago when I said, "spectate or contribute"......I dont mind getting cut down at the knees, as long as its with a good well supported argument. I wont be calling my dealer a moron without telling you why I felt that way...if u in turn think I am being a twat, you say "ooi matey boy, youve got your head up your arse cos heres an extract off the service book that confirms that air cleaner can run xkm before a change"
Know what I am getting at?
