Aye.. a number of campervans have the webasto diesel heaters in them. It's a bit of a drain on the battery starting up but if you had it programmed to start up only once in the morning then that would be not too bad.
I work with reciprocating compressors and many of these have pre-startup oil heaters which get the oil warmed up and then circulating prior to starting the main compressor. This would be a brilliant idea for a van as all that wear that occurs during start up would be minimised...
The stationary heater warms up the coolant not the engine oil and if you decided to buy a new Vito you can option it with remote control so you can start the heater while in your house so that the interior and the engine are warm before you get in to the vehicle.
