Mercedes Fault Codes... These Will Get You Out Of Trouble......one Day ! ;)

I thought I would post some information that I have found on Mercedes Fault Codes, as I have had to find all this the hard way.

Anyway I hope the following information helps people as I know it can be frustrating dealing with Mercedes themselves, and ALL MY experiences tell me, you are far more likely to get blood out of a stone, then anything from Mercedes:

I will have to post this as several posts as the restrictions are 1000 characters only per post!...so Please see the Continued post/s

Hi Mate,

Yes when a diagnostic unit is plugged into the cars Computer it retrieves 'Fault' Codes, by comparing them to the ones in this list, you SHOULD know what you are dealing with.

Hope this helps

Has anyone successfully connected a PC with diagnostic software to a '99 V-class ?

I've been looking for ages at the options, and not the £105 quid for a cable off eBay ...

Connecting the big round plug under passenger seat through an opto isolater into a serial port of a laptop seems feasible. Then using downloadable software, tach pro or Freediag

To be honest I drowned in the acronyms and lost the will to live.

I've found various schematics off the Internet but hadn't got down and dirty with a soldering iron yet ... here's hoping ...

Hi, I am going to get a 'professional Diagnostic unit' connected tomorrow, and will see how it works. I got a quick glimpse of it yesterday, but the mechanic wasnt able to use it as it was brand new and he wanted my help to install it on his computer after the software for it arrives tomorrow. It isn't a laptop but a device ( of which I will know more about tomorrow ) that connects to car and reads codes or info then is interfaced with a Computer via USB port.

I have ALWAYS thought about making an interface too!.. but haven't researched it much.

Would you like to post here or email me the schematics if you would be so kind
And what of the connector?

Maybe this is the start of something new ... interfacing and finding out the problems with our cars OURSELVES! as opposed to giving it the DONKEYS (dealers) to get no information AND to be CHARGED for it!....& not forgetting to mention the fact of getting the car back with further damage, broken bits that were ok when it went in, or returned with added faults!.. ALL courtesy of Mercedes DONKEYS!

I wonder if there is an error code for that?!... fault code MERCDAD = Mercedes Dealers Are Donkeys!

Many Thanks
SARGE

ahhh now we is talking, we is!

This thread is going excatly where I love to go...places I can cause chaos!!

Seriously tho', also been wondering about that diagnostic tool MB uses. Had a brief look at one, seems to me to be an industrial laptop with a cable interface (rectangular metal box halfway along the cable to teh plug under the dash.

P'raps some propellor head can help me out here, but essesntially you have one ECU (in da cabby) that communicates on a certain protocol (most likely propriatary), the diagnostic device then has its own software platform to operate off. A protocol converter is probably needed to get the two devices to chat to each other. I am sure there is a good reason for why the two devices dont talk the same language probably related to how the hardware operates.

A local, non MB, Diesel specialist company near me has said that they have a diagnostic tool that can interface with my ECU for reading and resetting codes, I wonder if it can reload other parameters (speed limits, injector timing etc)....anybody else got thoughts on this?
