Removing my gear knob?!

Got myself a new gear knob gaiter (£5.99 for a leather one off ebay) to replace the torn, knackered one on there...

However, I can't figure out how to remove the gear knob to fit the new one!

There is a collar that holds the gaiter neck to the stick. A rotating ring below this twists and drops down. I have done this - but can't seem to release the knob from the stick.

The gear knob seems to be attached to the stick by 'claws' and I'd guess some king of spline.

Anyway - any clues how to release these claws? Or get the knob off to replace the gaiter?!

Unhappy

All I can say is I have broken two so far trying to do this ... they are £65 to replace from Merc (with gaitor)

Once you have unlocked the ring you have to (some how) unclip the four lower plastic legs from the metal shaft of the gear lever. This has been where I usually fail ....

Unless anyone can enlighten us to a safe way of doing this my manky old gaiter will be staying.

When i changed mine i used a piece of wire. Had to carefully lift the lugs up & wrap the wire into the groove. It's a pain but once all the lugs are free the gear knob lifts off.

Once you have pulled up the gaiter and exposed the collar, twisted and dis-engaged it from the gearknob, all you need to do is to pull the knob and it will come off the shaft(oo-er),this was told to me by a Merc spannerman and works.Anyone know where i can get a replacement without spending £60?This is on a 2000 108CDi

I tried the pull off the shaft (got to love the inuendo!) but it just wasn't coming...

The claws were too well engaged on the groove - no chance. However, I have a great solution and my knob is now in my hand.

The short version:

cocktail sticks

The long version:

Carefully insert the sharp end of a cocktail stick behind each claw. This lifts it out of the groove and keeps it clear.

Once you have all four clear, the knob slides off easily and simply.

Now I'm stuck trying to remove the collar that holds the gaiter to the knob!!!!! So close - I'll keep fiddling with cocktail sticks!

Regarding the gaiter collar that is fixed to the knob - simply rag it about and it comes away...

Well, slightly more refined -

It's again a set of claws that catch on an undercut. This collar clamps the top of the gaiter.

If you can, pull the gaiter out to give some free play in the collar.

Next, prize it open and push down. If you can do this two at a time it's easier to get it off. Keep it pushed over the lip and you can work round and remove the collar.

Refit the gaiter, press the collar back, pop the knob back on the shaft, clip the gaiter back in and jobs a good 'un.

All looks shiny and new plus smells of leather for just 5.99. Thanks eBay! And the help above too!

Mine comes of with a firm 90º twist and lift everytime.

Hint: be brave.

Took me a year to figure this out.
