Hello, I wonder if anyone had a similar problem and may be of help:
I own a V220, 2001 model with 150k Kms. The Van has Automatic Transmission.
I hear a rather strong clok noise when the driveshaft is first loaded or when it is unloaded. For example when I put it into Drive or Reverse (or change between one and the other), or when, while driving, a drop the accelerator pedal and push on it again. It is as if there was some slack in the transmission somewhere.
The 'clunk' is normally the result of a broken accumulator spring in the valve body, common problem with the ZF trannies. It is a fairly easy job to replace for the keen DIY but do not try it if you are not a hand with car mechanics. Spares for the ZF trannies can be obtained from Sussex Autos who are approved ZF dealers and autobox specialists.
Although the V Class (V230) has a ZF HP20 gearbox, my SAAB has a ZF HP18 gearbox which had this problem - after replacing this spring in the valvebody, it was real smooth once again!
Thanks, I have some experience in car DIY (rebuilt a couple of engines etc) and have access to a workshop where I can do some repair work myself but not really in any transmission work. Do you have any link which I can use to understand what needs to be done and where is the part to replace?
Many thanks
