v230 brake discs and pads changed

Hi again

I recently changed the ball joints on my v230 after deciding to take on most of the maintenance myself, my next challenge was the brake discs and pads. I'm pleased to say changing the discs and pads was a relitively easy job! I was suprised that everything went well as when working on cars, something always seems to pop up and go wrong! for any one else wishing to save themselves a fortune and know that the job has been done correctly, i have one piece of advice regarding the procedure. the only sticking point was the guide rods holding the pads on, these were quite difficult to remove and needed a good soaking in wd40 before punching out...oh and leave the caliper in position so you have a solid object to hit at! the caliper is held on with a m10 hex head bolt and a m8 allen head bolt, requiring 16mm socket and 6mm allen key respectively. Hope this comes in handy for someone[:D] regards tomk

RE: v230 brake discs and pads changed

Any improvement after your disc/pad change?
I've done my rear pads, front discs/pads+ change of
brake fluid and full system bleed...
My brake pedal is still as spongy as before and the stoping power is not that great..
All parts are original mercedes parts...
It's done 400 miles now since the change and the pads have beeded in nicely..
Anything else to do to get more braking power??

Had the car through it's MOT test and the brake pressure was within the norms..
I guess the feel on these V's is not great because they're heavy cars and they roll a lot... [:(]

Only one problem with a spongy brake pedal.....air in system! Bleed it again with the patience of a mountain and you will feel the difference! Also, did you use a 'quality' brake fluid? (Not Halfor-s!)[:D]

It's absolutely dead easy! the main problem I find is winding in the cylinders. I used a g clamp and wood for this.

Basically you need to take the wheels off, remove the brake fluid reservoir cap (so you can push the cylinders back), disconnect the wear indicator wire, take the caliper retaining clip out, remove the guide bolts (you might have to pop off a couple of caps on these), take the brake caliper off then out come the pads. You might need a bit of wire to hang the caliper off as you don't want to dangle it off the hose.

Now comes the hard bit- you have to push back the cylinders. You can use a large screwdriver and lever it or use a g-clamp. Your new pads will be thicker than the ones that came out.

Once this is done, pop in the new pads and put it back together as you found it.

Before you start up and go, you will have to pump the brakes several times to get pressure in them.

Cheers

Ad thanks for this, I will try this over this week - what do you mean when you say, you might have to pop off a couple of caps?

there's a couple of dust caps on your calipers that prevent the dust getting in, you just prise them off.

Cheers
