Here are some shots of our 1250's lumbering through Pritchette Canyon,Moab.
It took us late into the night to finally get through the last obstacles.
The trail is a LOT! tougher than it was 10 years ago!!!!
The orange one carries the spare, witch we had to use,and is spaced to accept a 404 radio box w/ the bottom flattened out. all the sides are removable and the box bolts on top of the bed w/ the spare relocated to the back.
This is pretty slick when camping off camber to use the tilt cyl. to level it out.
The gray on was a crane unit w/ a massive U1700 sized dump bed a huge subframe.
Looks like both of them are running drum brake rims. Is that just what the trucks had on at the time, or were they put on for the trip? I see neither of them had mudguards on - is that due to the wheel/tyre choice?
On the most of the 6 bolt Unimog, excluding the 1300's and 1550's we like to have the wider track w/ either our wheel spacers or the flimsy drum brake rims. ask any 1250 owner that has gone to the wider track as to how much the off road stability has been increased and they usually rave about it
There are other advantages in increased forced frame flex and suspension articulation as well. The increased wheel "swing" in regards to steering is also beneficial off road for grabbing fresh material for traction or for stepping up or down a ledge.
There are a couple of disadvantages, increased bearing load and wandering down grooved pavement, but the pluses far out way the benefits in most of our use.
I daily drive a 416 extended cab and even w/ it's longer wheelbase the wider track shorty 406 is far more stable offroad, except for steep descents and ledges/walls that exceed the short 93.3" wheel base.
We tend to destroy fenders and mud guards quickly.
The Magpul Mog is just bad ass!
And these help out to,
very large 425 Xm47's
waste gated turbo
torque converter clutch
higher than normal clearance w/ well thought out total under armor protection
w/out the big turbo, the torque converter clutch is a total pig!,massive power sucking vampire.
