I was going to take one of my MB4-94s out today which has pneumatic wipers and was dreading the fact that they don't work since it was raining.
Mercedes no longer sells rebuild kits for them and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience and if rebuilding is still possible and or what is likely the problem. They used to work somewhat now not at all. I'm not even sure what the controls do. There is a knob that I suppose controls speed or bleedoff or something. Turning it makes no difference.
A while ago I missed a control unit for sale on ebay because it went too high but with hindsight I wish I had been willing to pay more.
I guess I could convert to electric but I kind of like the idea of using air like so many other things on Unimogs.
I don't have any experience with the factory air wiper setup on the MB4/94s, but I may have some parts on one of the junk cabs I have in the yard, I will check when it gets daylight and get back to you. I was out in CO a couple of weeks ago working on a MB4 blower truck and it had been retrofitted with off the shelf U.S. air wiper parts for old school semi trucks, looked pretty stock until you started digging into it... might be a solution if there are no parts avalible for it.
Cheers,
Ben

People freak out when I drive into the shop with a perfectly good Mercedes, only to start cutting it up for parts. I just tell them that something has to die inorder to keep all of the other Benz's running.
I wonder how many parts are different from air to electric? You want to sell me what it takes? If I can't fix these. I kind of need wipers even though this is on the crane truck so it doesn't get a whole lot of road time. Although last time I took it to a job I decided another route might be faster on the way back to the shop and ended up on the interstate for 10 miles in driving rain during rush hour and this truck has a backfill blade of the front plus the Atlas crane on the ass end plus another 800lbs in generator, welder, compressor, ox ac bottles and tools in a truck that hasn't been turned up so I'm hitting maybe 45 on the down hills and I don't have tags. I was just waiting to get pulled over and not wanting to go through the explanation. It was pretty stressful. Fortunately I made it unscathed.
Also that retrofitting simi parts idea sounds interesting. Any more insight into that idea?
I can sell you the pieces to convert to the electric wipers, although I don't know how much you already have. I may not have any switches left, but I know i have two wiper motor/transmission setups and the wiring bits if yours doesn't have them.
As far as the semi setup, I will take some pics of the setup on my old White roadboss wrecker to give you some ideas.
I spoke with Von today and learned a bit about how they work so I think the first thing to do is do a little trouble shooting. When I get the time. We had snow last night. Arrrgh!
