I simply expressed resistance to the idea of dismantling a supposedly good vehicle for parts, and would have to anyone. The proposal to sell it a little under market so that some other member could reap the rewards of ownership was just a suggestion.
I have to agree with Todd as business owner myself, that the market is bending low, and I guess my final point here is, bend with it, or go broke. If a supposedly good case Unimog doesn't sell for 8k, then think about how much less the random used parts will go for? Services, especially like this, have got to be able to deal with negotiations from prospective buyers... because they're the customer
It goes without saying that the guy knows the Unimog inside and out, as anyone of us would tinkering with them for a living.
However, theres a clear line between being an Asset and being a Asshole.
My biggest concern here is the market value of Mogs, well, everything for that matter. A year ago, that truck would have brought $15k easily, I know because I sold several in worse shape for that much.
I thought for sure someone would snap it up at $8k and I thought Von was being generous to our community by offering it at that price.
I think that the problem right now is a deadly, hopefully short term, combination of the economy and the season. Mogs typically sell the highest in the winter, when they get used the most commercially. But in my opinion, Mogs have lost about 40% of their average value in the last year. It's a shame.
Just wait until the U.S. military releases their 1800-2500 (depending on your source) U419 trucks. My suggestion, get the truck you love and love the truck you got - prices will plummet when those trucks release, which reportedly will be soon. They've been staging them on the auction lots for the last several months.
Todd, I agree that the sale of all of those SEE trucks is going to impact the overall value of unimogs in the US. Personally I'd rather have my 416 without the airshift and other complicated stuff. If I'm going to upgrade to a more complicated, harder to work on truck, then I want in to an MBU/SBU to get some comfort out of the deal. To me the SEEs are like the pristine 406 snowcutters with the aux engine on the back that pop up from time to time. Way cool to stare at, but made for a specific purpose. Sure I'd want it, but what the *!@#$%* would I do with it? Anyway, OT from the original post, sad to se that one go. The cab looked nicer than mine, but I hate bright yellow.
[Moderator note- 4 letter word edited to !@#$% Keep words clean. Readers come from all walks of life and we would hate to have readers worried that they can't view this at work or other overally polictially correct location (school employee, for example)

Well said. $8k was a great price on this truck and no one presented the cash. Even though the price of mogs is down, and supply is high, the price and availability on good parts has not changed, IMHO. It's a simple business decision to part out a good vehicle. None of us prefer that outcome, even Von, but it's the logical choice.

The childish whining and bitching that folks have done about this mog will just make it more difficult for folks to find these types of deals. Do you think Ben, Von, or anyone who has a rough unit that they know that they can make more $$ parting out or cannabalising, but would prefer to preserve as a complete vehicle are going to let the forum know about it? Or are they just going to call a couple folks and see if anyone is interested and then cut it up if no interest and get about 2-3x's the $$ they would have gotten for the complete discounted vehicle.
With all the odds and ends I've got from Von, I call my truck FrankenMog I am glad that Dr. VON Kittleberger is around! Our Mog community in the Americas is small, we need to rally around and support each other.
