OM352A Lift Pump ???

As some of you know I have been plauged with engine running issues and my new 1987 U1250VL Unimog. To the point of missing a lot of NW Mogfest trying to get it to run.

I think I have found the issue... Maybe

Currently if I run the unimog at high RPM then It will run but with low less than 2000 RPM it will die after about 10 min or so of idleing.

I took apart my lift pump "pulled the big nut off the side" and this is what I have found, Besides the rusty spring it appears the piston and mating surface is all rusted and not allowing the piston to fully retrack to pump another pump of fuel, I think, if I understand how this unit works.

FYI I had to use a hammer to push the piston out of the unit to get the inside shots.

So Im looking for some ideas and advice

If you think the problem is in the lift pump then I would remove the priming pump and inspect the seat for debris and I would also inspect the check valve that sits under the 19mm (I think) bolt for debris as well, there is a thread on the other Mog forum-do a search on "fuel system" and "fuel system;thanks to all" that discusses the lift pump and other aspects of the MOG fuel delivery system. Good Luck.

Contact your local bosch diesel injection shop. They can get the new parts you need, probably the 2 valves (one under the primer, other under the other nut), and properly lap them into the seat. I use Hoffmans' fuel injection in Delaware, they shipped the parts to me so I could rebuild it myself.

I'm all for repairing the pump etc., however keep in mind the realities of the cost. What are the parts and Labor going to cost to get a "rebuilt" pump versus the cost of an entire unit from MB. Personally the 000 090 10 50 Lift Pump COMPLETE runs $258.00

I would be surprised if that isn't close to what your parts and pieces plus an injections shops labor is going to be.

Sometimes we lose perspective in the rush to rebuild when sometimes the complete assembly is pretty reasonably priced. Case in point, the 404 Kingpin Rebuild Kit....the rebuild kit is more expensive than the entire steering knuckle.

Cheers,

I'll bet your U1250 sat for a long period of time with water contaminated fuel...

Scott, I'm not saying every pump should just be rebuilt. My point was; if you have the skills/tools, and the core is rebuildable, you can save some coin for other mog goodies. If it's really crusty, a new unit is the way to go.
