I can't get full right lock on the steering any more. Sharp right turns on the trail are tough to make in one try now. I can't say whether it happened suddenly or whether is was gradual.
After a quick visual inspection I can't find anything bent or binding. The only thing I can think of at this point is that there's a buildup of mud/dirt inside the steering damper which is preventing its full compression. I've certainly been through some mud.
Has anybody had this happen before?
Short of that, could it be a problem with the steering box itself? It seems unlikely to me.
I'm planning to raise the front wheels off the ground and have a helper move the steering while I look for the problem. I thought maybe somebody here might know what's going on.
Anyone?

I wouldn't have considered the damper, but it's a good idea. Jack it up, and disconnect the damper. If that doesn't do it, disconnect the steering box from the rest of the linkage. Let us know what you find!

Yup, the damper was packed with dirt that had once been mud.
I removed it and decided to cut the protective hood right off to avoid a repeat of this.
Can I be the only one that this has happened too?? I even spray the mud off the undercarriage once in a while which is more than a lot of people do (I think).
Anybody noticing that their 404 doesn't turn right as sharp as it will turn left?
I might see if I can find a bellows to protect the piston but its mounted directly behind the axle which is well protected anyway. I might just leave it bare.
