HI All,
I hope our forum administrators will allow this important off topic thread.
This morning while listening fo Sirius NFL Radio I heard about this web site. Check it out. It may finally be the means to make your voice heard on this important topic. Here is the link:
Well, freeing up more US land for exploration and drilling, or constructing new refineries IS a good idea in my book and I'm all for it.
But.....
It's certainly not going to reduce the price of gas NOW (in big capital letters like the web site). The only thing that's going to do that is a drastic decrease in the cost of feed stock (crude oil), either through a big drop in demand or a change in attitude (or plan, if you're into conspiracy theory's) on the part of the commodities traders.
That site has the smell of a e-mail fishing scam
{edit} well, scam is probably too strong a word but I suspect you'll be getting a lot of e-mail from the host organization if you sign the petition...

As to it not helping to lower prices now.... Can't agree on that. Once our Gov. began to sound like part of it is going to push for drilling and it became aired that the sentament in the US is behind that.... the prices of oil began to drop rather sharply.

Scam/Fishing could be. I was very hesitant to allow the thread much less bump to a Sticky because of this.

Karma I'm puttting you in charge to keep scanning the net to see if anything pops up about this one as a scam/Fish site. Let me know immediately
HI Coach,
Thanks for the consideration and trust. I will stay in touch with the site and try to determine if there are reasons to contact you.
Personally, I think it is legit. If I didn't, I certainly would not have posted. Newt Gingritch (sp?) seems to be the force behind the petition. There is an interesting petition status report by Newt on You Tube that more fully explains the intent of the petition.
There are no political party affiliations in involved, as far as I can tell, other than what one's personal opinions might be concerning the drilling issue. Unfortunately, often these opinions do tend to track down party lines but that is incidental.
This is important. If any of you have reason to think that this petition site has had unwelcome internet side effects, be sure to contact me or Coach. Neither of us, as well as the forum as a whole, want to appear to be sponsoring or supporting a ruse.
"Freedomworks is at it again. This diary is second in what I plan to be an ongoing series of watching Freedom Works and Freedom's Watch. Both groups style themselves as grassroots groups, answering the conservative call against MoveOn. Yet neither group is grassroots powered, and both have ties to powerful conservative think thanks and powerful conservative leaders. In this diary I will briefly discuss the powerbrokers behind FreedomWorks and then look at one of their causes-- Natural Gas, and how they are using liberal frames to get people to act on behalf of natural gas."
"Background
From CommonCause
FreedomWorks is the result of a 2004 merger between Citizens for a Sound Economy (a conservative think tank with strong ties to major corporations like General Electric and General Motors) and Empower America (an organization that lobbied for tax reform, Social Security reform, etc.).[11] FreedomWorks is headed by former House majority leader Dick Armey and claims to have 700,000 grassroots activists nationwide fighting for "less government, lower taxes and more freedom."[12]
Before the merger, Citizens for a Sound Economy boasted a long history of Astroturf lobbying. Slate Magazine reported in 2003 that the majority of the organization's funding came from corporations or corporate-backed conservative foundations, and that the group was mostly an "extension of Armey's lobbying work [at Piper Rudnick, a D.C. law firm]."[13]
Post-merger, the Astroturf lobbying continues. FreedomWorks has accepted corporate contributions from telephone giants Verizon and SBC (now AT&T)
Unlike MoveOn, these groups are run by powerbrokers and have backing of massive international corporations. While the pretend to reflect a grassroots energy-- they are reflecting an aggressive corporate agenda which fears real grassroots power.
MANY of those sources are as left wing as FreedomWorks seems to be right wing. Both have a tendacny to throw mud on the others work, even if it's on the up-n-up.
(warning political content - just this once)

Oh...yeah...the money behind MoveOn.org, George Soros - HE'S not a powerbroker...ohhhhh noooooooooo...
I agree that both sides are shady, I posted that to show that the backer of this petition is a corporate lobby group. To me, that's enough for that post to be in another type of forum or just deleted.
