Next weekend (1st june) i'm off to Koln in Germany to get a volkswagen aircooled van. On the trip back i have to pass the seller of that 416. Lets hear the things you guys can come up to, to check on.
is it possible to cut shipping cost by sharing the space? like de-built the pumpunit in europe and fit a box and trow in spareparts or so for others? also the cage can cost more shipment as that makes the truck a bit larger. un-bolt it, slice in pieces and rebuilt in canada?
Would be nice if it worked out for you.
Regards Ronald
ps, the pics show an internal cage? or at least a rod standing in the passenger footwel. HAve to see how that effects the inner space. Also it might be some 'bubble' rust looking under the paint on the drivers side corner? That would be a thing to check. Also the PTO unit at the back, under the box, looks like thats aftermarket, extra gear or coupling in it for engage at the back with that red button? have to check that out to.

just a few points for comparison. last year I bought my first mog. 1982 U1100 L doka fire truck/rescue . no roll cage , but with everything else. my winch is hydraulic not pto. water pump and tank rolling bay doors, rust under the left headlight, rust under the floor mats both sides. motor meter 438 and mileage was 6100 k I paid $28,000 sitting in Antwerp Belgium. just a little food for thought. I bought it from Scott at expedition imports.
Its from Unimog Holland, Volksmog on this site showed me the site, he says he several hours away, and offered to go inspect it for me if I was interested, heres the pertinent info:

So, would you guys mind pouring over the pictures and as unimog owners/fanatics tell me what I might be missing, not seeing? This truck has it all in my critiria, Fast Axles, PTO winch, the external roll cage is kick butt, and I assume its a diesel as its a 416, the DoKa cab is shorter than most I think, but that doesn't really bother me (I assume these were made custom for the fire department?) and I'd be ditching all the pump stuff. Theres 3 pages of pictures. The box looks really good and useful, I don't think its a tank back there?
Thanks again.
Oh, its $22,500 Euro, so thats about $35,164.66 CAD, Plus import. Thoughts?

Just a few items that catch my eye. First why is it wet? water hides alot and everything looks better wet. Next, why no side or back shots. All are just front angle shots. The close ups are mostly of nothing, I would like the photos to show a bit more. Like if the photos were taken about 5ft back more. And there is rust on this truck. All the tall tale signs are there! Rust under the front lights, the drivers floor. And this is not a DoKa, you will find those two rear seats very narrow and you would not want to ride in them very long. Also why do you want fast axles? I would thing superfast would be better. But then I would like to find a set of fast axles to put the set of superfast ring & pinions I have into them! This would give me 4.93 to 1! Its a nice truck, just don't see $40k of value by the time it gets to your door! I would jump up and buy a real DoKa for that kind of $$$. But hay, if your happy with it, don't let me rain on your parade!
Well, heres the thing I guess, I'll give you my reasoning maybe that will help you guys (and myself) with figure out what I want in a Mog. I've run into an issue, I have a very nice car that is my daily driver, I bought it 2 years ago when my work required I own a car for traveling back and forth to work, (up to 4 hours out of the city) so I went out and bought an AWD car (winters up here can be a real $&$^#). And all was good, then I changed jobs, my old job I didn't have time for hunting, because I was on call all the time, now I have lots of time for hunting, but I can't stuff a dead deer or moose in my trunk (what good is leather if you can't wipe it down?), let alone get to where I'm hunting, (I don't even drive it down gravel, so going to the shooting range I have to borrow my wifes vehicle) I've always had a unimog obsession (since seeing the big eagle one, at the time I owned an '83 Toyota truck). So, I sold my wife on the idea that if I'm going to sell my car, and get a hunting truck (hence the fast axle requirement), it should be a Unimog, now my daily commute to work is a whopping 2 blocks, and my wife has a decent vehicle for commuting to the big city and back when we need to go, so I'm not worried about the unimog and making a daily commute, and I've driven the chevy 4x4,s the toyota 4x4's, the suzuki samari's, the geo trackers, and there great all around vehicle's, but I want a diesel unimog, and its got to be a doka, I have several "big game" rifles that I want to keep in the cab when I'm hunting. But...I can't handle rust, I'm a handy guy, but bodywork isn't one of my talents, I used to do vehicle electrical work, and light mechanical work, so I'd rather pay the extra for a Unimog that someone has already done (like that wicked orange one you have), but I have a $35,000 price limit, The firetruck bushcage truck is $35,000 + Import, but if I can sell the pump equiptment, (Theres a dude an hour away that is always buying that stuff, not sure what he does with it) that would recoupe the extra I'd have to put out, however, if I can find another I'd surly look at that instead, As seeing it in person just gives me that much more confidence. Theres that one in BC, it seems well maintained but again theres that rust issue. Now I see theres one in Vallejo, CA, that I'll have to consider.
406/416 DOKA interior shots. The low, centered window in the back wall of the
cab is a good clue that the truck was an airplane tug, and it would be equipped with a torque converter.
Thanks, I was wondering what that little window was for, I've seen some with a rear wiper? My wife is frantically searching the web for used DoKa's, she's hooked to. This is her favorite so far:
I once again humbly ask the forum members for there help, I emailed him with some questions, and heres the responses (In Bold):
My questions are:
* Does the vehicle need anything mechanical?
* The engine was rebuilt by Hans @ Unimog Canada (Mross Import service) about four years ago. There are some leaks but it's nothing major in that it's just normal 'sweating' from typical heavy duty diesel engines. I have been driving her just about everday since then as a work truck (I'm a carpenter / contractor) hauling everything from tools & crew to materials and supplies. She starts great and runs very strong. I would suggest the wiring be looked at. It's old, never really maintained properly before me and so this should be addressed. Some of the problems I have had with the wiring are as follows: wipers; they work but the switch or something else at times prevents them from stopping so they keep working. I'm currently looking into this but time is limited for me (work is booming out here!); starter switch (push button) has just been replaced. Ignition wiring needs a bit of attention too. It could simply mean replacing the starter switch. Again, parts that arent' maintained tend to age faster than those that are. This particular unit was first commissioned to a lumber company in Spain so I think that the crew didn't much care for it and just worked her into the ground. I've put tons' of time and money into her and am sorry to let her go but unfortunately, it's just that time for me. All the signal and required lighting works. I've installed new vintage cab marker lights and a rear deck / reverse light along with roof top combination lights but none of these are wired or connected yet. Again, no time. I have all the necessary wiring and switches and am in the process of fabricating a little switch plate to attach all the new switches to. The master cylinder (operates the clutch and brake) needs repair of replacing. I have a new master cylinder and will install soon. There is a heavy duty winch that is centre mounted and is operated by the PTO that runs to the rear. It's switching I'm not so sure about 'cause I never looked into getting it operating. There is a seven pin connector and an air control that operates the winch but again, not sure about any of this. The hydraulics (dual system, primary and secondary) is solid excepting that the control unit needs to be addressed. Currently the only hydraulics connected on the truck operate the three way tipper bed and it worked fine until the guys at the train yard (who clearly didn't know how to drive the MOG) attempted to pull one of the levers and without the pins pulled from the ball joints, the fame and bed bent a bit and it snapped one of the ball joints. I believe as a result, it may have blown something in the sending / control unit. If you're somewhat handy and have the time, this should be a relatively easy fix: drain the system, pull the unit, clean and repalce the gaskets & seals as required, reinstall and you should be good to go from there.
* Do you think it could be driven to Alberta?
* I would have driven her to Vancouver from Toronto were it not for the price of diesel fuel , the time spent on the journey and the mileage she gets: approx. 5km / litre of fuel.
* Is there any major rust on the frame?
* There is no rust on the frame at all. The cab and bed sides are another story. The cab isn't too bad at all actually however, the bed sides have a terrible rust issue. nothing deep, just surface stuff but I don't have the facility to paint properly. I was planning on hand cleaning with a wire brush and an angle grinder with a flap disc but again, time!
* How are the tires?
* The two rear tires are practically brand new, less than 5,0000km. The front tires were on the truck when i purchased her and the right front needs replacing soon.
* Does it have the auxillery diesel fired cab heater?
* No, it doesn't have the auxillary diesel cab heater. It does however have a cab heater next to the driver's feet, which is fed off the engine coolant system. This was standard hardware on most Mogs and it's basic: there's a valve that opens to allow the coolant to run through the heat exchanger coils within the heater and there's a little blower motor with two speeds.
* Does it shift well, pop out of gear at all?
* It shifts great. Forward through all six gears and both reverse gears work super clean and smooth. Never pops out of gear. Transmission fluid changed on a regular basis along with engine oil and filter.
Whats the top speed?
Downhill, with a tail wind you should hit 84 - 85 kph. The engine is revving at 2,800 rpm and it's in sixth gear at that point.
How many gears?
Six forward gears and two reverse gears. The two reverse gears are the crawler gears, which obviously work in forward too but unless you're really heavily loaded or pulling some serious weight, you won't need to use the first two forward gears. As a daily commuter, I run through 3rd - 6th gear as my forward / driving gears and only use 2nd as the reverse.
* Is the engine strong?
* The engine is very strong. Original MB OM352, in-line vertical 6, with huge / tall pistons and six rings around each. Standard on almost all 416 models. The injector is the high output (110 hp) and with the gear ratios, there's no place this truck can't go.
The 4x4 works great and the diff.lock does too. It's operated by an air locker switch mechanism.
Sorry for all the questions, I'll looking for a hunting truck, and have been looking for a Doka for some time, Its a major purchase, so I want to make sure I know what I'm buying, I'm looking for one with a good solid frame, and solid mechanicals.
Trevor, this truck has honestly been my baby for the last five years. As far as I see it, I brought her from close to death to a great life. She's been running great for me for the last four years regularly. I'm sorry to have to let her go but because of all the money that I've put into her, the bank is calling me for the loan and I don't make enough as a carpenter to be able to pay enough of it back in time to keep them quiet. Also, I'm moving back to Toronto soon and cannot afford to ship her back either.
My suggestion is to make the trip to Vancouver and have a look at her for yourself. Please believe me when I say that I appreciate that this is a big purchase and you want to make the right decision. This truck is great mechanically, it is aged and will need some TLC but mostly to cosmetic stuff and minor operational stuff.
So, hows it sounding?, He was asking $28,000, and he dropped it to $24,000
