Help air diff

Have a problem with diffs on 406, u900 mog. The diffs have not been locked in for a long time, but the front one locks up, but the rear diff does not! can i give the diff casing a bang an see if it pops it out? or take the air pipe of at the rear diff an see if air is coming out of the pipe? An if i disconect air pipe to diff will i have to blead the air system? Thanks

I wouldn't bother banging on it, but it can be very helpful to remove the drain plug and/or the air line from the axle and get some kind of solvent in there to try to loosen it up. Fill it part way, then apply air and drain. If it is dirty, put the fluid in there and let it stay for a while. If it goes away (drains into the diff), give up and tear apart.

Speaking of air switch for the diffs on a U900....

Hi everyone,

In regards to the question earlier, I have a somewhat odd question, that I hope to get some answers for... before I make a mistake. So, my U900 doesnt have the air locker switch... and the first question is if the stock switch is a 3-2 way type. secondly, I have an air assisted wiper air switch that appears to be a 3-2 way type that i'm considering fitting to the air banjoes for the air lock system. Throw your thoughts at me. I have done nothing yet. One thing I will need to do is remove the banjo fittings from the air switch, and fit the banjo fittings from the air wiper system... otherwise, its seemingly a perfect fit... right down to the mount for the switch. -this may be an easy solution to buying a new $500 air switch... but, I could be wrong too! Thanks, and take care.

If it will work then just make sure you dont switch it out till you can replace your wiper system. Other wise Mr Murphy is gaurenteed to send rain your way the second you remove that air switch from the wipers.

Sorry can't answer that one. Mr Murphy see's to it that I know everything there is to know about things that no one ever askes questions about. But I can tell you that Mr. Murphy will definately make it rain the day you take out that windshield wiper switch if you dont have some other whiper system set in place already. That's just how it goes :P

Another thought in regards to the air locks, although not exactly addressing the questions. When I brought my 406 back into service after many years of providing a field home to mud-dobbers and other lifeforms, my diff locks were leaking. A fiend suggested I put some Marvel Mystery Oil into the line to moisturize the seals. Under the theory of it sounded easy and harmless I gave it a try - and everything has been working perfectly ever since.

Do a search on both websites, there is information, on diagnosis, short term fixes (trying to get the seals to swell using oil) and long term repair. Here are a few links.....

Thanks for the replys, i have taken air pipe off at the diff end an there is good air pressure coming out, so have decided to put 3 in 1 oil in to lubricate. The nxt problem for me is there is not a drain plug on the bottom of my axel casing to drain out the water? The only drain plug is on the diff housing for draining the oil out of the diff. Has anybody else come across this? i have not got a drain plug to let water or dirt out on the diff casing.. your thoughts. Thanks
