Thanks guys for all the posts, most helpfull,
I think i have the early axles as there is not a drainer to let the condensation out, are the seals deff a different size? Thanks
I have also seen seals leak so bad that they would pop the dipstick out of the tranny!
Mine leaked so bad the pressure blew the inner seal out of the front right portal drive - what a mess that was. The breather tube which was plugged with mud did not help matters either.
E staban, thanks, your post about seals blowing dipstick out the tranny, is that caused by rear diff seals? an air running up the diff shaft casing into the gear box?
Technically, the locker drain bolt is directly under the air line on the axle housing, not on the diff housing.
I've never seen an axle housing missing the drain plug for the locker before, but maybe some exist? (or you got a friday unimog axle)

The nxt problem for me is there is not a drain plug on the bottom of my axel casing to drain out the water? The only drain plug is on the diff housing for draining the oil out of the diff. Has anybody else come across this? i have not got a drain plug to let water or dirt out on the diff casing.. your thoughts. Thanks

Aaron,
The early axles are a little different. Even the king pins are not the same. As you can see in the attached photos the piston and spring are different, as well as the seals. Which both go on the piston, instead of one inside of the axle housing. I think this axle was dated 1967 if I remember correctly.
Thanks von, thats the same front axle as my one, it has a bolt just down from the air inlet valve for the diff. the rear axle does not have a drain plug at all, so my guessing is its an early 406, proberly mid 60s, i have ordered a pair of seals for the locker, but now am thinking that they might be the wrong size? do you know if they are any different to the newer 406 axel?? where can i find the id number for my axel, have looked for the ally plate in diff casing, but its not there, there are some numbers on the diff casing, can my local unimog dealer match these numbers up to tell me what axels i have?? thanks

On the set I did the rear were the same as the newer mogs, while the front was the one that is way different. I have a set of the older style seals in stock if you do need them.
thanks von, Have had some seals arrive today, so hopefully over the nxt few wks i will strip down and replace. I was thinking about drilling an tapping a bolt into the bottom of the axle diff when its in bits, so i can drain the diff of air like the newer ones.
What is the bolt for on the front axle picture that you have posted, as it seems to be just in front of the air locker air input, it cant be a bleed screw on top of the axle?
