Mog trip report

Location - Lithgow NSW (2 hours from Sydney)

First trip out with the XM-27's and crawler gears fitted.

They rub slightly at full compression. Not sure what I'll do to fix that yet, I am leaning towards lifted springs.

The day started off with some ruts.

Followed by some rocks.
I wasn't too happy with the tyres on rock, but I think airing down more will help (I was at 25psi)

The tyres really excelled in the clay .

Procomp e-MT's didn't

All the pics here

Just a note on the crawler (creeper) gears.

They are fantastic. Worth every cent.

Hand throttle on, it will slowly and smoothly crawl up almost anything. The level of control it gives you is amazing.

Gonzo Au,

Looks like you had a fun day out and about. That poor little Patrol needs to be given credit for at least trying I guess.....

I'm probably going to install the same tires on my Swiss 404 so I have a couple of questions:

1) When you said they rub a little at full compression, was it bad enough that the problem must be remedied right away or did it just happen once or twice?

2) Did the tires rub in the front or rear, or both?

3) Do you think they will still rub if you air down to, say, 18 psi?

4) Was the steering effort manageable? Was much more effort needed than with the previous tires? I'm assuming you've got manual steering.

5) How was the on - road performance? Did these tires make it impossible to achieve a decent road speed, say 80kmh or better? Did you notice much of a difference from the old tires?

6) Do you happen to know what the rolling radius turned out to be with your truck? (Distance from center of hub to ground surface).

Keep up the good work and my condolences to the Patrol owner, although I supposed he and his passengers arrived at the Pub ahead of you....

Only at absolute max compression and only just a little bit of rubbing. Not enough to stress about...

Just the front (I think). I didn't notice any in the rear.

Yeah probably - Airing down wont make the top of the tyre smaller.

No harder than with the stock milspec tyres. OK maybe a little bit harder, but not hard enough to warrant $2000 hydro-assist steering.

With 37" stock tyres, it would do over the 100km speedo on flat ground. Now it will only do 85 (indicated on the speedo, so really still much the same)

At 35psi, the tyre stands exactly 42"

Actually, we all went to the pub together

We made it home in similar time. My wife even managed to fall asleep in the Mog on the way back

Wow - the joys of 404 ownership. Falling asleep while riding in my 416 would require a large number of pints (but then you could sleep stretched out on the DoKa's back seat).

I checked the speed with my GPS running the MPT81's (same size as Gonzo's XM27's) and at a roughly indicated 80km/h, the GPS read 88km/h. Mind you they do sap a fair bit of power out of the little 404 engine, mainly, I would say, to do with the massive increase in weight of the MPT's compared to the Firestone Bar treds.
