Hello all, i've got a couple of questions about my 404 MOG project. I'm fitting a 280E M110 engine and was wondering if anyone had fitted this engine before. My main problem is working out the engine mounts. I know these have to go to the front engine to eliminate problems with chassis flex. I have searched the web for pictures and threads on this subject, but haven't found anything. I'm really after a picture or 2 of the mounts if anyone has done it, just to make sure what i'm planning is going to work.
Secondly i've been thinking of fitting power steering, i've come across 406 power steering boxes for sale in the past, but not a 404 box. Will a 406 power steering box fit my 404 without alteration, or will i have to adapt it?
Any help would be great, Many thanks in advance Frank.

Lots of info about the power steering adaptation around, search here or pirate 4x4. There will be some fab work, but a mechanic friend assures me he can do it; with a double action ram, a standard power steering pump and some creative thinking. The guy is a genius when it comes to working this sort of thing out, so i am inclined to believe him. A few of the members here have done it through various methods and posted details of their approach.
The 406 box has been made to work on the 404 before with a bit of fabrication. I never saved the link, maybe someone else will post it. It seems like it would be the easiest route, full hydraulic steering is not legal on the road in most places.
Hi, thanks for your help. I was thinking along the lines of a hydraulic steering setup, as this mog is registered as an agricultural vehicle. This means in the U.K. it can run pure hydraulic steering.
My only fear with this is: a friend of mine had hydraulic steering on his Landrover hybrid. We went up an off-road trail in Derbyshire, his steering had a total failure. We had to repair it where it was. This took us a WEEK!!! it was 6 miles up a very tough trail, we had to transport the parts to it, before we could move due to the fact that the steering had no mechanical connection.
I do like the idea of using another unimog steering box. i never even considered a 421 box(DAMN!!!). I sold 1 last year when i started my CJ-6/unimog hybrid. (DOH!!!). I didn't think it was heavy duty enough.

Power assit ram is the way to go to avoid this and much simpler to install from what I have read. If you break a bracket holding the ram or something else fubars.... you can still drive out on manual steer. Pretty sure this is the most common method of power steering upgrade done on Mog 404's.

Hi Coach,
I like the idea of using a ram-assist set-up, but it's not a common thing here in the U.K. We tend to fit a suitable power steering box.
Does anyone out there know what is needed to build this set-up. I have the pump fitted to the M110 280E engine anyway.
What else would be required?
I think the best place for me to get a ram would off an old truck. I know of a few trucks that have ram-assist for the second steering axle.
Does anyone have a better suggestion for where to source a ram?
How is the ram operated?
I know on the trucks i've seen it on they just have pipes running from the power steering box.
How is it done from a non-power box?
Hi Coach,

Thanx for nor responding in large letters
The rams are standard off the shelf hydraulic units and do not come from a donar vehicle. Try tractor supply places to get rams. Usually you replace the steering stabilizer with the ram. Most complicated is getting a secure weld onto axle and steering link for the ram. More info in the links below.
We just received our Hydro Assist Kits for the 404's so will be working out how it mounts and getting it working.
I will try and get some pics for you of how it all fits. One thing we have noticed is that the what seems to be the only place for the Power steering pump will mean that the Fuel Pump will need to be replaced with an electric unit.
