hello all, my boss just purchased a 1984 406 which i get the "pleasure" of working on. i have always been a fan of unimogs and to finally play with one is pretty cool. this particular one came with the snowcutter implement and the aux. turbo diesel on the back. now its not in the best of shape but it is getting there. so far i have chased down the air leaks (modified the tank's fitting to run 3/8npt push locs), fixed a few hydraulic leaks, made some new led taillight boxes with two oval leds per side, fixed the headlights and exhaust, threw in some new autometer oil pressure and ammeter gauges, got a new heated windshield, made a lightbar out of an old thule rack, fixed some dents, and am doing some much needed maintainence. now my next task is to get the heaters (stock and eberspacher) working to take some cold out of the cabin. i am working with the eberspacher now and am missing a few parts. it is the D1L version and i need a metering pump and also it would be nice to get the timer. does anyone know where i can find these parts, or ones that would do the job that i can get from napa? thanks so much and i have already learned a lot from just reading the threads. very informative to say the least
Nice to hear about another 406 up the road from me. Is Wilson next to Jackson Hole ? Mog pictures ? Where did you get the heated windshield and what did it cost ?
Is your 406 yellow with side curtains on the snow blower motor. I live across the hiway and am restoring a 1955 401. You may see the rear axle sitting in my driveway.
aha small world. yea thats the yellow monster across the road. its in the shop right now getting more stuff done on it though. swing on by and check it out if ya want.
yea wilson is jackson's next door neighbor. i got the windshield from eurotech serivces. jim got it to me pretty quickly too, although i'm not sure what it ran. i just buy parts, company covers the costs. cheers!
That looks great ! How did you manage to adapt to NPT ? I'm putting a Bendix air dryer and German aluminum air tanks on my U1000, needless to say there are a myriad of interface issues. I was thinking of just buying plugs then drilling and tapping NPT where I can to eliminate most of the banjo fittings... keep up the good work !
hey thanks a lot man. well i actually took the stock air fitting, cut the threaded nipple off, enlarged the hole to the 3/8 npt drill size (37/64"), then tapped it. there is enough wall thickness (about 1/8") for a reliable seal after tapping. i changed all my tank fittings to this and took out the tire inflator as well and replaced it with a standard quick disconnect air coupler. sure beats spending 18 bucks for each 22mm-3/8npt conversion adapter and it works great!
here are some more pics of the mog. the custom diesel tank was already there which is a nice edition. the front headlights are now painted plywood (they were broken and are useless anyways with the snowcutter on front) and you can also see the "custom" thermostat housing which the po fixed up. the wire coming from the top of the cab is for the light bar and its an altered trailer quick connect. there is also a pic of the 3/8" npt "conversion" fittings and i found the parts i was looking for for the heater too! thanks guys!
kimmer thanks for swingin by, i'll be sure to stop on by sometime and check your progress. cheers!
