Think about how cool this really is. Full adjustability of ride-height, spring-rate (stiffness, greater air pressure/taller bellow = softer ride) and pitch/roll control!
Slam the bags to the ground while cruising freeways, attaining a smooth ride with cornering performance and air resistance of a Corvette (well, almost ). Not to mention the potential you gain in inclined off-road and docking situations! Tilt one, or more, corner independently in wherever direction it might be needed.
Of course it demands a little work, but you already have a compressor and tank – just trick a little around with some switches and valves.. voila!
I looked into air bags but, to get a bag with a high enough weight rating it is over 11" in dia. So they will not fit between the frame and the tires. But if you have room bags are cheep I have found them for $110 cdn each.
So, you are saying the wider diameter, the more weight it's capable of?
Even though the fat and wide bellows tend to frequent larger (semi-) trailers' suspenion setups. I'm not too sure if what you say is a fact?
I have browsed through a couple warehouses with truck and trailer parts, and couldn't get my eyes off of the air suspension section. There was a whole lot full of bellows in suitable shapes and sizes.
Anyway, for the price you pay for plain coils... I'd get a set of 2.5 coilovers! More work, I know..
The problem I am having is the fact I need 10k lb. of weight capacity on the rear axle. I have found 9" dia. air bags but they are only good for 3600 lb. each, you need an 11" bag to get over 5k lb.
If you look at this Firestone site (go to technical data, then to reversible sleeve) they list sizes, and capacities. I have a friend in the industry who is looking into it further for me.
Same problem with coil overs, I am no expert but I don't think you could put 10k lb. on a set of coil overs.
Yeah, you're right on with the coilovers. Even with the highest spring-rates you get, you would have to have multiple of them to hold that weight. They would also demand a shit load of fabrication in order to work back there.
I would definitively check up on bags, do let me know if you find anything of interest! My only concern would be to find a bag with satisfiable load-rating AND enough travel/flex.
Well my truck is back on all four tires again. I got my 2 new springs from Dendoff yesterday.
If any one ever needs springs made give Mark a call 604-580-3400 Ext.117, he was very helpful. Here is a link to there site, they do all kinds of springs.
I imagine they could do different spring rates? I thought I needed some lighter springs for recreational use but mine seems to flex ok even without a bunch of weight in back.
Yes Dendoff can make you any size or rate of spring you could ever want. Mark was very helpful. I just had copies of the factory ones made, the only difference is my new springs are single rate (Dendoff only dose single rate) not progressive like the stock ones. But since the stock spring are not that progressive (only taper in the lat 3 coils from 1" to .860"), I found a place that could make progressive ones but they would be $850 each (Yikes).
BD you don't have your sway bars in right? Was it hard to get the front bar out, what did you have to remove to weasel it out?
I am leaving my rear bar out and probably will pull the front when I do the exhaust (soon I hope)
Welllll the fact is since I wasn't ever going to use the front sway bar I just cut it to get it out. May have been a foolish move, I wrestled it around for a while but didn't see a way to get it out without a lot of trouble.
