How strong are you? The steering wheel design is sized based on the fact there is no Power Steering. It has Strong Arm steering system. Therfor if your not a strong person get A LARGER steering wheel! If your Arnold Swartzenmoger then get a smaller one.

Ok in all seriousness now, my background is in biomechanics (efficiency of human movement) and I really think that unless you add Power Steering you will be at a disadvantage in driving your Mog with a smaller wheel. I don't know your physiology so I can't say for sure.

I'm changing the steering wheel on my 1300 and like you, wanted a bit smaller wheel in the range of a 16"-17" diameter. There are lots of after market wheels available. The problem is finding an adapter that fits the wheel you want to the MOG steering shaft. To machine a one off adapter, cost may be a factor unless you can do it yourself. I plan to dis-assemble the original wheel and use the hub to build what I want from that. Then ship it off to a company here in the states to have it leather wrapped. I found a three spoke race wheel at a parts swap meet that will provide the basis for making the wheel frame. I also want to use a quick disconnect like those used on race cars to take the wheel off. Since I plan to use vehicle as expedition camper it would provide an additional measure of theft protection when it's unattended.
There is an orange MOG out there with what looks like a custom steering wheel, unfortunately I was never able to track down the owner to find out where they purchased wheel and adapter. If I can be of any help I will.

steering wheel

there are two steering wheels as standard on the 404,
the first one has three spokes and is generaly fitted together with 10.5x20 tyres, the size is used so its not to hard for turning.
the second is the four spoke wheel, this is used with the 12.5x20 tyres. merc benz fitted this larger steering wheel to compensate for the larger tyres.
the choice is yours but they are the standard fitments
you could fit the smaller one 3 spoke but it may be a little heavy on road for shunting about, off road you can manage with both sizes quite easily
hope that helps
