research all of the forum before posting this, we are in the process of changing motor and transmission from unimog 404 with a gmc 350 engine with transmission , At this point the only concern is how to hook up the current drive shaft to the new tranny, anyone made this transformation or know a way to adapt one to the other or... thanks all for your help, forum posts where a great help to get this far in our project.
There has been a few who have done this. Of the two versions that seem to be done is to mate the auto tranny to the Mog tranny. Some mount the engine and tranny in BACKWARD in the bed of the rig with the auto tranny above the Mog tranny. Auto tranny mates with a home made gear box (one input gear on top that mates to auto tranny, and one output gear below that mates in opposit direction to the mog tranny.) Search for Ubermog in this forum for more info.
The other was done by Dr. Dan. but Im sketchy on the details at this moment. See here http://www.angelfire.com/ak4/johnson/RockMog.html (take note that this rig is dramaticaly lighter than the orginal 404 and has less frame flex and a custom body to work around the engine. Are you building a hardcore offroad rig, and expedition camper or what?)
The last option use to be performed by a Canadian fab shop (now out of business) He replaced the whole driveline with conventional and also changed the suspension arrangement which many consider a MUST if you dont use the Mog tranny. I believe he used a 3 link suspension on both axles.
PS. If your not changing the suspension design; once you find a way to attach the mog driveline to the auto tranny, what are your plans to prevent ripping the tranny-transfer case, bell housing etc. to shreds from the forces that the torque tube style "suspension" system will create?
First, a V8 will not fit under the 404 cab without unacceptable body mods. Two, the stock bellhousing seems to not like the weight and power of th V8. Three Their are better options for a mog based truck. Four, most who have done this type of mod have mounted the engine mid ship on the truck with some sort of transfer device to the mog tranny.
The big question is why are you doing this swap. Their are many options, and I support you in your venture to get mopower, but are you going about it the best way.
I can tell you this, their is a guy here in my town who did the V6 with tranny bolted to the front of the mog tranny, it seems cool, but makes me cring every time I see it.
There is a considerable amount of fab work involved in mating an upgrade/downgrade of this type. The vehicle was not designed for the additional foward weight if you plan to stack the transmissions. I've seen all the modifications Doka is speaking of and it's not pretty. The UNIMOG from a factory stand-point is a very capable trail rig and this side of creating another UBERMOG seems to be pointless. If you're looking for more hp, the Turbo diesel, or high compression head option would make for a more reliable drive train. If your shop is equiped with all that mine isn't, then I encourage you to take a stab at your goal. Just keep in mind the spring rate up front will need to be increased for the additional weight, the cab will have to be lifted or modified and most likely the h20 plumbing will no longer be in the front. Also, the motor and tranny will require some sort of carriage to allow for flex(centered pivot) along with a custom adapter for the joining of the new to factory trans. All this seems trivial when discussing it here with text, but I assure you that there is a great deal more to consider when contemplating this idea. Many have thought about how to get more from the tractor with four wheels we call unimogs. How fast should my tractor go? A UNIMOG on steriods... see Stephanes UBERmog video in this forum. This is a good example of a well thought out RE-engineered V-8 setup.
