M180 head swap

I found a car at the Junk yard that has an M180 duel carb engine.

The engine is marked M180.924. The car is something like a 52-53' My only problem is that it has a short reach head. My truck has a long reach. I know that the head will swap over, but what are the problems with the short reach head. And, is the M180.924 a higher compression, or are the extra ponys from the duel carb setup..

RE: M180 head swap

Ok, I figured out, that the M180 from this particular car has 8.7 compression. And of course short reach heads. I guess i am over the short reach vs long reach. It sounds like it was just simply an update. As for the compression, its not as dramatic as I wanted, but it will have to do. So, I bought the head for $24 and pulled it. I had my shop boy clean it up, and it actually looks real nice. I pulled the valves which were are real crusty from corrosion, but should be ok. So no, I have to decide if I want to port and polish etc etc. I think I will get it decked today, and maybe have the head fluxed. But we will see if I go any further. I hope the extra compression, and duel propane carbs make a few more ponys on my 404.1 It would be nice to see a little of what my diesel can do.

RE: M180 head swap

Ah Coach, why did you delete your previous post. It made me feel warm and fuzzy. And yes I caught the diesel part.

Anyway, well the head is at Edwards Engines getting machined. I opted to have the head resurfaced, and to get a nice 3 angle valve job. Now I just have to get some head gaskets and such, and i should have the head on next week some time. I am going to run the single carb for a week or two, while I order the second propane carb. I sure hope this is worth all the trouble. I will keep everyone updated with pics and all.

RE: M180 head swap

Hi K.C.:

I am new to this form and a relatively new Mog owner.
I too have just procured a high compression head for my 2.2L and will be making the swap in a couple of months. It has to go out for a valve grind and deck height check et all.
I know that if you want to use the dual carb set up you are going to have to cut up your dog house. To me that makes it a bad idea as there isn't much room in the cab now. I will be curious to hear how much of a difference the new head makes in your 404.
Please keep us updated on your progress.

RE: M180 head swap

As far as I know, the dog house does not need to be cut for dual carbs. I will find out in a day or so. If the carb is in the way, I will machine plates to tip the carb forward to clear.

An update though on the head I got. It looks like the former owner was not to gentle with the engine. The head had a crack in one of the combustion chambers, which will require a new seat, all the intake valves were pitted on the stem, and one or two exhaust valves were burned. I happen to have another head with valves that swap over, and we are checking them now. So, its going to cost a bit more in the long run, but it should be worth it.

I will install the dual carbs on my old head for now, and will report back what kind of gains I see. I might even go have the truck dynoed just for some real world numbers.
