RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

Thanks guys, I had heard from one person that it should not be done, but really did not know how much this guy really knew about the 406.

RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

I can confirm tht my 416 operators manual says pretty much what the 404 manual says - different gear selections for flat tow but the same warnings.

Please post the differences for a 416 to the 404!

RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

Never tow a Unimog, equal it is a 2010 or 416, everyone up to this Modell include F -G Trany off the 406/416 with or without Craler Gears, double Clutsch however, more then 20-30Km (20miles). Stop for an hour ore more isn´t a chance for the next step.

Reason is Trany needs Engine rpm for cooling itself.
No rpm no Oil, Tranny will brake thats it!

by Doc

Take a look inside, if no Gear is used no Oil will come to Bearings etc.

RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

little Tip from geman Scene!

Use for Trany and hole Axle:

Gear Oil: syntethic 75W90 GL4/5

We all drive this Oil, better cooling good for sychronisation,....
Best choise for Axles too, the hole Camper scene do this, even al others I Know. Forget what BA (Manual) will tell you).
Hardest Trip I go with my 404 is my Siberia Tour 18000Km /three months.
One way too keep your 416 Trany cool, is what Franz build. This guy ist the 416 specialist in Germany, i think he is born as an Unimog Mechanik[:D]!

See his Cooler and Contakt him if you want!

RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

Hey Doc,

What is the 404 tranny scene over there? Coolers too? What oil?

I would LOVE to figure out a way to yearly clean out the oil channels in the gear shafts to ensure proper lubing of the bushings. With out removing the tranny! Maybe even devise a pump to send some additional oil into the area where the channels are fed oil. Do this after going thru a cooler and maybe a filter too. That would necessitate thinner oil I would think???

RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

on the subject of "cleaning" the tranny, wouldnt it be possible (if the outgoing seals are in really good condition) to fill the entire gearbox with something that really cleans everything, like diesel?

perhaps just push the truck a little bit, to get all the gears spinning without load, perhaps let it sit for a while (a few hours/over a night/whatever) and the empty the box ..

the fill it completely with oil, and them empty so all diesel is gone ...

the fill up to normal level?

perhaps change oil very soon, and not put any load on the gearbox for a few miles?

bad idea, or worth a try?

RE: Can a 406 be flat towed??

1. the idea of Fizz is the way I do for 16 Years now, fill in drive a little while 1-2km and whait for next day drive another little while (alway´s with Diesel inside) then when this is warm enought let im go.
Fill with the Oil that I have posted, go for 500km change again thats it. Most hard working Trany´s will work perfekt after this work.
Synchorproblems will be gone!

2. The picture which show the Oilcooler made by "Franz" will cool down Oiltemperature in Trany for about 20´C.
This is enouth for Engines like 617 or M130 and a perfekt compromisse for summer and wintertime.

More cooling is necessary for 617a and all other engine´s up to 200Nm.

Doc 404 <- then i know what i will do when i get the carburators back on my Unimog ... clean my trans! [:D]

does your friend Franz make trans coolers for 404´s to (the lid with fins on it) or is it only 416?
i know there made in USA also, but Germany is much closer to me (Sweden) ...

if he makes the for the 404, do you know how much they cost?
