Camper Mog possibility

Well this sorta dropped in my lap as a possibility. I've driven by a house many times with a minimotor home parked next too it with weeds all around it. Been thinking (I know it's dangerous to think)... been thinking... "hmmmmmmm.. swap that onto my Mog"

Anyway I stopped at that house today and rang the door bell. LOW and BEHOLD the guy who answered the door was the PE coach I taught with all school year long. He was just talking to the wifey about selling it half hour before I came by. It needs work and I might could get it for 600 to 800 bucks.

here are some pics of camper mogs.
http://www.xor.org.uk/unimog/campermog.htm

Here is a few pics from a web site of the exact model of the one I could buy. Last pic is a picture of my 1962 (617A diesel) Unimog I would swap this all onto.

RE: Camper Mog possibility

The bottom section of the camper body at about the height of the wheel opening can all be cut off. it is just a skirt of fiberglass. or it could be cut and hinged for access to tanks etc.

RE: Camper Mog possibility

Remember a 404 has much more frame flex than the others. Cause of this you can't have a cab over camper cause the cab top will smash into the bottom of the bunk bed above during flex. Unless of course you do a full body mog like Coach is thinking. You could also seperate things and have a camper box on back by itself and a bunk above the cab not attached to the box.

Above line is some professional and home made Expededition/Camper Mogs
Seperate bunk above cab on this one.

RE: Camper Mog possibility

coach, be very careful, i would park ya mog side by side on the pavement and get mesurements of everything, plus ya got that machine gun opening in yu top to consider, how long if the mog box vs the dodge box, bet ya could sell the unimog box and break even if ya not count the labor and opps i did not think of that dealies, go for it, bet that is a lot nicer inside?????Does it have a generator under the camper somewhere like ya been wanting? I see the rub as being the overhang and flex, but guess ya could mount it on some surplus air bags and air it up if ya were off road to keep from banging???? I also think the camper would make it worth about $5000 more on the mog if ya ever ebay it and go to a 1300 or something newer with 4 doors, bet ya could sell the remainder van on ebay or dodgepowerwagon site for a repower to get ya $$$ back??????

Hya,

keep in mind what use for the 404 you have. if going offroad or bad dirt roads you will need to make a triangular subframe to mount that unit. (as on a radiobox, not the flatbed) if just driving regular roads you can simplify the mount. It looks like a hell of a nice base to build on. With a unit like that i would try to make a complete new triangular subframe on which the CAB and UNIT would be mounted in one piece. (subframe like that busshaped TLF 404)

RE: Camper Mog possibility

Hya,

Nope, not VW powered. I use the regular m180. its quite difficult(expensive to) to get an other engine road legal in holland. For us its easyer to swap to a m130 or m123 or m110 (if it fits) as long its a mercedes 6 cilinder gasmotor. My VOLKSMOG will be based on a volkswagen carroserie from a LT light truck on a 404 chassis. I am not that much in progress now.http://people.zeelandnet.nl/rschra/LT-UNIMOG/index.htm First i have to rebuild an fiat 600 oldtimer for my wife:~(http://people.zeelandnet.nl/rschra/fiat600/fiat600.htm

about VW engines, i think that the 5cil. 2.5 tdi will fit but is no good for a truck like a unimog. the 4cil. 2.8 tdi used in the newer LTvans will be better on torque. a good diesel engine to build in the 404 is a om602LA. http://www.42-dont-panic.de/Unimog/O...7___om602.html I drove some U90turbo with that engine, and it performs really well. because of the high rpms of the engine i think more usable for roaddriving, for offroad better a high torque 4 cilinder (U130), om314 or the 6cilinders om352. the om352 will not fit a 404. and with the om314 the road speed will be to low.
