12v Air Conditioning

Has anyone run across 12v airconditioning systems? Thinking about putting one on the cab and or camper box on a 404 Unimog.

I once followed a web link to one that is made in europe but have not been able to find it since then.

RE: 12v Air Conditioning

Do you mean a 12V air conditioner using a compressor driven by the engine or do you mean using an inverter with a electric system ? A coleman camper 110V system has been explored but the cost of purchasing a used A/C unit coupled with an inverter large enough to accomodate the amps of an electric A/C compressor is pretty formidable (I think the large capacity inverter is $1300)

On the other side any Ag/commerical roof mounted style A/C unit would work (Reddot comes to mind) they run about 1500 uninstalled. However an A/C compressor is going to rob your already poor power output in a 404. I had a customer explore a RedDot A/C unit on a 404.0, the plumbing alone meant some very difficult sheet metal mods, and the powerloss was pretty substantial. The buyer was in Western Texas and decided that a Swamp cooler might work better for his needs.

Good Luck.

I wrote to them just yesterday. Here is a drawing of their system for trucks. I am told it can be mounted in a remote location. Hidden up between frame rails and utilizing a heat exchanger. This may work in a small camper box or a doka cab. Possibly both if it is set up right. I may look into this one myself. The bottom photo is the F350 they are putting a unit in so it should be Mog friendly with any luck.

cooollllll (pun intended)

not a bad price?

According to this calculator the larger unit will work well for my home too. Well my home is only 12x16 cabin. Wonder if I could then make it transferable from home to Mog for when I go on trips. hmmmm. Oh..... home is off the grid and will be running at 12v

According to the website these are marine units though and they cool part of the mechanims with water.... but do not use the water as part of the air conditioning process. They just cool down the components. They said they are developing a radiator to serve same purpose for non marine applications.

here is their roof mounts. They are pretty low BTU buttt... they are so cheap (less than a grand each) you could mount two. One for each passenger.

I like the roof units but I would have to cage it somehow or hide it in a roof rack to avoid damage from tree limbs on the trails. Looks like the truck / RV units they are developing are going to be based on the MES 4000 anyway. It would be great to be able to fit it completely under the back seat with the aux. heater but space is very limited. (11 W 8 H 19 L) They mentioned mounting it in a utility box under the bed. I like the idea but I will have to avoid deep water fording and that's no fun.

An assumption that may or may not be correct.

Just got a reply. They are now available for non marine use via a small radiator.
